In a thrilling encounter at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium on Friday, January 3, the Tamil Nadu Dragons emerged victorious in a tense shootout, claiming a vital bonus point in their 2-2 (6-5) win over Vedanta Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League 2024/25 season. The match, a part of the league phase 1, saw some exceptional individual performances, particularly from goalkeeper David Harte, who played a pivotal role in securing the shootout victory for the Dragons.

The game started with a fiery pace as Tamil Nadu Dragons were quick to make an impact. In the opening minute, Thomas Sorsby won a penalty corner (PC) for the Dragons, but despite a strong flick from Jip Janssen, it went off target. As the first quarter unfolded, the Kalinga Lancers, led by forwards Dilpreet Singh, Gursahibjit Singh, and Angad Bir Singh, continued to press but failed to convert any of their chances into goals. After a goalless first quarter, the Lancers took the lead in the 24th minute when Alexander Hendrickx, with his powerful dragflick, converted a penalty corner, giving his team a 1-0 lead.

With their advantage, the Lancers looked to build momentum, but moments before halftime, Angad Bir Singh's dribbling skills set up another penalty corner opportunity for Kalinga. However, poor trapping on the top of the circle led to the chance being wasted. In the second half, the Dragons quickly responded. Just 45 seconds into the third quarter, Tom Craig scored a brilliant equalizer for Tamil Nadu, using a powerful tomahawk to beat Krishan Pathak in the Kalinga goal.

The match remained tightly contested, with both teams playing on par, but the Lancers regained the lead in the 43rd minute when Hendrickx converted another penalty corner, making it 2-1 in favor of Kalinga. However, Tamil Nadu Dragons refused to back down, and in the 51st minute, Jip Janssen scored a crucial goal to equalize once more, making it 2-2 and sending the match into a shootout.

In the shootout, experienced goalkeeper David Harte rose to the occasion, making crucial saves to help the Tamil Nadu Dragons secure the win. The Dragons held their nerve, converting their penalties to win the shootout 6-5 and claim the bonus point, which could prove invaluable as the season progresses.
