Georgian judo legend Lasha Shavdatuashvili is set to make a significant impact in Indian judo as he visits the country from November 25th to 29th, 2024. During his visit, Shavdatuashvili will conduct a five-day masterclass for athletes and coaches at the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) in Bellary, Karnataka. This exclusive event is part of the IIS Excellence Accelerator Programme, which aims to elevate the standard of judo in India and provide a platform for athletes to learn from one of the sport's most accomplished practitioners.

Lasha Shavdatuashvili, a three-time Olympic medalist and one of the most successful judokas in history, will lead the sessions, sharing his wealth of knowledge and expertise with nearly 70 top judokas and coaches from across India. With a career that boasts a Gold Medal at the 2012 London Olympics, a Bronze Medal in Rio 2016, and a Silver Medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Shavdatuashvili’s visit is expected to bring invaluable insights and inspiration to Indian athletes.

In addition to his Olympic success, Shavdatuashvili has secured five World Championship medals, two of which are Golds, making him a dominant force in the world of judo. His extensive experience and achievements place him among the most decorated athletes in the sport, and his guidance is expected to have a lasting impact on the future of judo in India.

Shavdatuashvili expressed his excitement about the upcoming masterclass, stating, “It is a great privilege to come to India and share my knowledge with the judokas and coaches here. I believe that with the right guidance and support, these athletes will shine on the international stage in the near future.” He also praised the Inspire Institute of Sport for its commitment to promoting judo and nurturing talent across the country.

The IIS Excellence Accelerator Programme, which Shavdatuashvili’s masterclass is part of, aims to provide athletes with world-class infrastructure, coaching, and exposure, ensuring that they are well-prepared to compete on the global stage. The programme focuses on enhancing the skills and potential of athletes as they aim for Olympic success, with a particular emphasis on the upcoming LA 2028 Olympics.

IIS Founder Parth Jindal emphasized the importance of translating India’s judo potential into success on the international stage. “Currently, India had only one judoka representing the country at the Paris Olympics. Our goal is to change that by the LA 2028 Games,” Jindal said. He stressed that bringing a legendary athlete like Lasha Shavdatuashvili to India is part of a broader strategy to enhance the country’s judo programme and increase its medal prospects in the coming years.

The Inspire Institute of Sport, based in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, is committed to developing future Olympic champions by providing top-tier facilities, coaching, and sports science resources. The institute’s state-of-the-art infrastructure is designed to give athletes the tools they need to succeed, while the global coaching staff ensures they receive the highest level of training and mentorship. By hosting renowned athletes like Shavdatuashvili, IIS is positioning itself as a leader in the development of elite athletes in India, particularly in the field of judo.

Manisha Malhotra, President of IIS, spoke about the significance of Shavdatuashvili’s visit, saying, “Lasha’s insights will be invaluable for our athletes as they prepare for the challenges ahead, particularly as we aim for success at the LA 2028 Olympics. The masterclass will give Indian judokas a unique opportunity to learn from one of the best in the sport, and we are confident that it will inspire them to achieve their full potential.”

The masterclass at IIS will include a series of technical sessions, drills, and tactical discussions, providing athletes with the tools they need to refine their skills and take their judo to the next level. For coaches, it will be an opportunity to learn from Shavdatuashvili’s vast experience and incorporate his methods into their own coaching practices.

India has a rich history in combat sports, and with the growing focus on judo, initiatives like the IIS Excellence Accelerator Programme are crucial for nurturing future talent. By bringing in a globally recognized figure like Lasha Shavdatuashvili, IIS is helping to raise the bar for judo in India, and this masterclass is expected to be a key milestone in the development of the sport in the country.

As Shavdatuashvili prepares to share his expertise with the next generation of judokas in India, the hopes are high that this collaboration will lead to greater success on the international stage, particularly in the lead-up to the LA 2028 Olympics. With a mix of world-class training, exposure to top-level expertise, and a strong commitment to success, Indian judo is poised to make significant strides in the coming years.
