“Maybe right there I’ll just be more physical,” he said, explaining that he would attempt to be more assertive in the paint, even if it came with the risk of being called for an offensive foul.

Jaylen Brown voiced his frustration with what he felt was one-sided officiating following the Boston Celtics' narrow 108-104 loss to the Orlando Magic at the Kia Center on Monday night. Despite putting on an impressive display with 35 points, Brown’s performance wasn't enough to secure a victory for the Celtics, who fell to a 22-7 record for the season. The Magic, who were without key players like Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, improved to 19-12, in part due to their strong defensive play.

In his post-game remarks, Brown didn’t mince words about what he perceived as biased officiating. “It was definitely a physical game,” Brown acknowledged, crediting Orlando’s defense for their success. However, he also noted that the Celtics could have matched that physicality better. “We should have met the physicality a little bit better,” he said. Despite his frustration with the refereeing, Brown recognized that the game was a valuable learning opportunity for the team, adding, “It was a good preparation game, but we felt like the officials were one-sided.”

Brown, who took on a more prominent offensive role in the absence of Jayson Tatum, indicated that the officiating was not consistent with his expectations. He mentioned that he had a hard time getting to the foul line, particularly in situations where he was fouled by Orlando's Wendell Carter Jr. “For whatever reason, they’ve kind of cut my whistle off where I’m not getting to the foul line,” Brown explained. This lack of foul calls was particularly evident in the fourth quarter, where he felt he was impeded by Carter Jr. as he attempted to drive to the basket.

The Celtics star, however, was determined not to dwell on the officiating. “I’m not going to complain,” Brown said, making it clear that he wasn’t looking for excuses. Instead, he emphasized the need for him and his team to adjust to the challenges of playing in such a high-intensity environment. “Things weren’t going our way,” he remarked, highlighting that the officials' calls played a role in their struggles but also acknowledging that they needed to find ways to perform despite the circumstances.

Brown also discussed his adjustments in response to the physicality of the game, noting that he had to alter his approach in order to remain effective. He mentioned using floaters more frequently as part of his strategy to combat Orlando’s defense, which had been particularly tough. “Maybe right there I’ll just be more physical,” he said, explaining that he would attempt to be more assertive in the paint, even if it came with the risk of being called for an offensive foul.

Despite the loss, Brown's determination to adjust his play and help his team succeed stood out. His frustration with the officiating was clear, but he remained focused on the bigger picture, knowing that these kinds of experiences were part of the growth process. As the Celtics head into the remainder of the season, the team will need to take lessons from these close games and continue to adapt, especially in the absence of Tatum. With Brown leading the charge, the Celtics remain confident in their ability to bounce back and compete at the highest level.
