The Vedanta Kalinga Lancers delivered a commanding performance in the Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25, thrashing the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers 6-0 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on Tuesday. This resounding victory marked the Lancers’ first win of the season and provided a major boost to their campaign, lifting them to fifth place in the standings.

The Lancers dominated the match from the very first whistle, showing aggressive intent and clinical finishing. The match began with an explosive start as the Lancers scored three goals within the first six minutes. Thierry Brinkman, the Dutch forward, opened the scoring in the third minute, capitalizing on a precise pass from Dilpreet Singh. Brinkman continued to be a key figure in the early moments, earning a penalty corner just minutes later. The rebound off Alexander Hendrickx’s drag flick was collected by Sanjay, who calmly doubled the lead with a smart finish.

Hendrickx himself got on the scoresheet in the ninth minute, blasting a powerful drag flick into the top corner of the goal to make it 3-0. The Tigers, who had been unbeaten in their first three matches, were caught off guard by the Lancers' relentless start and struggled to get into the game. Despite having more possession and entering the circle more frequently, the Tigers were unable to break down the Lancers’ defense. The Lancers’ goalkeeper, Krishan Bahadur Pathak, played a crucial role in maintaining the clean sheet, making key saves throughout the match. Pathak’s Player-of-the-Match performance included important stops on penalty corners from Jugraj Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh, both of whom were denied by the Lancers' shot-stopper.

The second half saw more of the same dominance from the home side. Nicolas Bandurak extended the lead in the 29th minute when he deflected Brinkman’s shot into the net, further demoralizing the Tigers. As the game progressed, Brinkman added his second goal in the 47th minute, showing great composure by running along the goal line and slotting the ball past the Tigers’ goalkeeper.

Boby Singh Dhami sealed the victory with a stunning tomahawk strike in the 49th minute, making the scoreline 6-0 and ensuring that the Lancers finished the game on a high note. The Tigers, despite showing glimpses of promise, were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, and the Lancers’ defense held firm throughout the match.

Lancers’ head coach, Valentin Altenburg, praised the team for their improved penalty corner conversions and solid defensive display, acknowledging that the team needed this win to get their season back on track. He said, "We needed this win, and the players delivered an outstanding performance today." Altenburg's satisfaction with the team’s overall performance was clear, as the Lancers put together a complete display in all departments of the game.

The Lancers' first victory of the season not only rejuvenates their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs but also sends a strong message to the rest of the league. On the other hand, despite the heavy loss, the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers remain at the top of the standings, but they will need to regroup and bounce back from this defeat as they continue their quest for a strong finish to the season.

As the Lancers now look ahead to their next match, they will be eager to build on this momentum and further strengthen their position in the standings. With a comprehensive 6-0 victory over the Tigers, they have demonstrated their potential and could become a formidable force in the tournament.

As the game progressed, Brinkman added his second goal in the 47th minute, showing great composure by running along the goal line and slotting the ball past the Tigers’ goalkeeper.
