India's Kiran George has made a strong impression at the 2024 Korea Masters, securing a spot in the semifinals with a convincing straight-games victory over fifth seed Takuma Obayashi of Japan. The match, played at the Iksan Gymnasium in South Korea, saw George, ranked 44th in the world, defeat Obayashi 21-14, 21-16 in just 39 minutes, showcasing a dominant performance throughout the quarterfinals.
George started the first game on an even footing, with the score tied at 1-1 early on. However, the Indian shuttler quickly asserted his dominance, racing to a 15-6 lead. Obayashi managed a brief rally, cutting the gap to 12-16, but George responded with four consecutive points, closing out the first game with a comfortable 21-14 scoreline.
The second game was a much tighter affair, with both players exchanging points in the early stages. George initially surged to a 7-3 lead, but Obayashi fought back, leveling the score at 8-8. From that point on, it was a neck-and-neck contest, with neither player willing to give an inch. At 17-16, George seized control, winning four straight points to secure the second game and the match, wrapping up the victory 21-16.
With the win, George, the only Indian player competing in the tournament, has advanced to the semifinals of the BWF Super 300 event, where he will face Thailand's top seed, Kunlavut Vitidsarn. Vitidsarn, ranked fifth in the world, defeated Liu Liang of China 21-15, 21-11 in his quarterfinal match. This marks the fourth meeting between George and Vitidsarn, with George having previously triumphed in their earlier encounters.
George's path to the semifinals included two impressive victories in the earlier rounds. In the opening round, he defeated Vietnam’s Kuan Lin Kuo in three games, 15-21, 21-12, 21-15, in a 57-minute battle. In the second round, George faced third seed Chi Yu Jen of Chinese Taipei, securing another hard-fought victory in three games, 21-17, 19-21, 21-17, in a 75-minute contest.
As George gears up for his semifinal clash with Vitidsarn on November 9, his impressive run in the Korea Masters has highlighted his determination and skill, with the Indian shuttler looking to continue his strong form in this BWF Super 300 event.
