Malone Expresses Concerns Over Nuggets' Performance Despite Jokic’s Triple-Double Milestone

While Jokic continues to be one of the best players in the league, Malone has warned against over-relying on the two-time MVP.

Michael Malone, head coach of the Denver Nuggets, voiced concerns over his team's recent struggles after a 126-114 defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night. Despite Nikola Jokic’s historic triple-double performance—27 points, 20 rebounds, and 11 assists—Malone was more focused on the team’s overall form rather than the individual achievement. Jokic's performance moved him up to third place on the all-time NBA triple-doubles list, surpassing Magic Johnson, but his efforts weren't enough to prevent another disappointing loss for the Nuggets.

The defeat was Denver’s fifth loss in their last six games, leaving them with a mediocre 11-9 record for the season so far. Malone, while acknowledging Jokic's greatness, expressed frustration with the way his team performed. "We just got our butts kicked," Malone stated, underscoring the importance of looking beyond individual statistics and focusing on the broader team dynamics. He made it clear that his concerns weren't just about the loss itself but about how the team lost. "It’s not so much that we lost tonight. I knew coming in here would be a tall order. I just don’t like how we lost and there is a big difference," he added.

While Jokic continues to be one of the best players in the league, Malone has warned against over-relying on the two-time MVP. He stressed the importance of balancing the workload and making sure they don't exhaust their star player. "We’ve all got to make sure we don’t run him into the ground," he said, acknowledging that Jokic’s all-around brilliance should not mask the need for the team to step up collectively.

Jokic, for his part, was humble about his achievement, downplaying the significance of surpassing Magic Johnson. "It's something that you're probably going to look at after you finish your career. Right now, you don’t even think about it. But it's a great thing. It's really nice," Jokic remarked, emphasizing that his focus was on winning and helping his team. His perspective reflected his team-first attitude, even as he continued to solidify his legacy as one of the game’s most versatile and impactful players.

On the other side of the court, Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell played a key role in his team's victory, leading the Cavs with 28 points. Mitchell's offensive output helped the Cavaliers improve their home record to a remarkable 13-1 this season. Head coach Kenny Atkinson praised his team's defense, particularly for managing Jokic’s prolific scoring. While the Cavaliers were unable to completely shut Jokic down, they focused on limiting his playmaking ability, which has been a significant factor in his success. Atkinson highlighted the importance of reducing Jokic’s assists to avoid his trademark impact on the game. "When Jokic kills you is when he has those 15, 17 assist games," Atkinson explained, emphasizing that the strategy was to make Jokic work hard for his points while limiting his ability to orchestrate Denver’s offense.

The Nuggets’ loss to Cleveland marks another tough stretch for the team, who have been struggling to find consistency. Despite Jokic’s greatness, Denver has been unable to put together strong team performances, particularly on the defensive end. As the season progresses, Coach Malone will be looking for more balanced contributions from his players to complement Jokic’s exceptional skills. For the Cavaliers, this victory further solidified their status as a formidable force in the Eastern Conference, with Mitchell leading the charge and Atkinson’s defensive strategy continuing to pay off.

With the Nuggets' recent form raising concerns, they will need to regroup and find a way to bounce back from these tough losses. The team has the talent, but as Malone pointed out, it’s not just about individual performances—it's about the collective effort needed to win games consistently. For the Cavaliers, the win was another step toward proving they can compete with the best, and with Mitchell leading the way, they continue to make waves in the Eastern Conference.

"We’ve all got to make sure we don’t run him into the ground," he said, acknowledging that Jokic’s all-around brilliance should not mask the need for the team to step up collectively.
