Neha is set to take on the role of captain for the Odisha Warriors in the highly anticipated inaugural Women's Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25. Recently married, Neha remains steadfast in her commitment to both her personal life and her professional career. With years of experience at the highest level of Indian women’s hockey, she is now focused on leading her team with a sense of purpose and determination.
"My goal is to lead by example and bring out the best in my team," Neha said as she prepared for this significant responsibility. Her leadership comes at a time when women’s hockey in India is gaining increasing recognition, and she is ready to guide the Odisha Warriors to success in this landmark tournament.
Neha’s recent victory with the Indian team at the Asian Champions Trophy has further boosted her confidence and set the stage for this new chapter. "Winning with India was a huge accomplishment for all of us, and now I’m focused on what’s next with Odisha Warriors. The Women's HIL is an exciting opportunity for young players to showcase their talent, and I’m proud to be part of it," she stated. She also emphasized the importance of the HIL, saying, "We've been waiting for a platform like this for years, and now that it’s finally here, it feels surreal. It’s a huge opportunity for young girls to showcase their skills on a national stage."
While this marks her first major tournament as a captain, Neha is no stranger to high-pressure situations. Having gained experience as part of the Indian women’s national team, she is more than ready to take on the responsibility of leading a team in a competitive league. "This is my first major tournament as a captain, and while there’s a sense of pressure, I’m excited about the challenge," Neha explained, reflecting on the journey ahead. "I’m determined to use my experience to guide the team and bring the best out of each player."
Neha's balancing act of personal milestones and professional commitments has always been an integral part of her life. "Managing both aspects of my life is something I’ve been doing for years," she shared. "My marriage doesn’t change my approach to the game. My husband has been incredibly supportive, allowing me to focus fully on my career. His support is crucial, and together, we’ve found a way to make it work."
The HIL auction saw Neha being acquired for INR 10 lakh, an amount that underscores her value in the sport and reflects the trust placed in her by the Odisha Warriors franchise. However, Neha isn’t focused solely on her own success. She is determined to use her position to give back to the community. "I want to support young athletes, especially girls who are passionate about hockey but face financial barriers. The funds from the auction will help me contribute in some way, perhaps by supporting girls in hockey academies who need financial assistance," Neha shared.
For Neha, the opportunity to play at home in front of a passionate crowd provides an added source of motivation. "Playing in front of a home crowd is always special," she said. "The support we received in Rajgir was immense, and I hope we experience similar energy and enthusiasm during the HIL. The crowd’s energy can lift a team to new heights, and we’re all excited to have that backing."
As the HIL season approaches, Neha is ready to take on the challenge and set an example for aspiring hockey players across the country. With her leadership, experience, and unwavering dedication, she is poised to help the Odisha Warriors make a mark in the inaugural Women's Hockey India League.
