The New York Liberty punched their ticket to the WNBA Finals with a 76-62 victory over the Las Vegas Aces, ending the reigning champions' quest for a third consecutive title. Sabrina Ionescu was the driving force behind the Liberty’s win, leading the team with 22 points as they closed out the semi-final series 3-1. While the Aces managed to stay alive with a Game 3 win, they couldn’t stop New York's momentum in Game 4, ultimately falling short of another championship appearance.
A'ja Wilson, who recently earned her third WNBA MVP award, delivered a strong performance for the Aces, contributing 19 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. Despite Wilson's efforts, the Aces struggled to keep pace with the Liberty's balanced attack and defensive tenacity. The win sends New York to their first WNBA Finals since 2002, where they will aim to capture the franchise’s first championship after five previous finals appearances without a title.
Later that same day, the Connecticut Sun kept their season alive with a crucial 92-82 victory over the Minnesota Lynx, forcing a decisive Game 5 in their semi-final series. Alyssa Thomas led the charge for the Sun, nearly securing a triple-double with 18 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds. Her all-around play, combined with a strong team effort, helped Connecticut pull even in the series at 2-2.
For the Lynx, Napheesa Collier was a standout, putting up an impressive 29 points and 13 rebounds, but her efforts weren’t enough to close out the series. With both teams now tied, the Sun and Lynx will face off in a decisive Game 5 on Tuesday to determine who will advance to the WNBA Finals to face the Liberty.
As the Liberty await their opponent, they prepare for a shot at making history, with hopes of finally claiming their first WNBA championship after decades of close calls. The stage is set for a thrilling conclusion to the WNBA playoffs, as the Liberty’s quest for glory continues.
