The match marked not only Djokovic's return to singles action but also his long-awaited debut at the Brisbane tournament after a 16-year absence.

Novak Djokovic kicked off his 2025 season with a commanding performance at the Brisbane International, defeating Australian Rinky Hijikata 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. The match marked not only Djokovic's return to singles action but also his long-awaited debut at the Brisbane tournament after a 16-year absence. The world No. 1, who is seeking to add to his remarkable tally of 24 Grand Slam singles titles, showed his usual composure and precision, despite it being his first match of the year.

Facing Djokovic was Hijikata, ranked 73rd in the world, who had been in excellent form towards the end of 2024. The 23-year-old Australian had won nine of his last ten matches at the ATP Challenger level and was riding high after an impressive season finish. However, despite his recent run of good form, Hijikata was unable to make a serious dent in Djokovic's game, who controlled the match from start to finish.

Djokovic began the match with an early break, immediately asserting his dominance on the court. Hijikata managed to stay competitive, but Djokovic’s consistency and superior shot-making allowed him to maintain control. The Serbian star quickly sealed the first set 6-3 and repeated the scoreline in the second set, finishing the match in just over an hour.

Speaking after his victory, Djokovic reflected on the match with his usual humility and focus. “I always expect myself to do well on the court, and obviously, a win is a win,” Djokovic said. “To start off the new season with a win is very important. I think Hijikata deserves a great round of applause for his performance. He made me work definitely for the win tonight.” The 24-time Grand Slam champion also acknowledged Hijikata’s efforts but expressed satisfaction in how he managed the match.

Djokovic’s victory was a far more straightforward affair compared to his doubles debut the previous night, where he and Nick Kyrgios had to battle through a tight tie-break to secure the win. As the top seed in Brisbane, Djokovic is aiming for a strong start to his 2025 campaign, and this win sets him up well for a potential deep run in the tournament.

In the second round, Djokovic will face French veteran Gaël Monfils, who won his first-round match against qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy in three sets. It promises to be an exciting encounter, with Monfils known for his athleticism and flair on the court.

One notable absence from the tournament is Djokovic’s new coach, Andy Murray. The two have recently teamed up following Murray’s retirement after the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Djokovic revealed that Murray is currently on a family skiing trip, adding a touch of humor to his comments, “He’s actually skiing at the moment. He’s on a family skiing trip. I’m sending my love to all the Murray family. I hope he doesn’t get injured skiing before he comes to Melbourne.” Djokovic also shared how excited he is to work with Murray as a coach, noting, “For 20+ years, he’s been across the net. For the first time ever, he’s on the same side of the court. Should be fun in Melbourne.”

Looking ahead, Djokovic has a busy schedule in the coming days. He is due to return to the court for a doubles match with Kyrgios on New Year's Day, but not before taking some time to celebrate with his family. Djokovic shared that they have plans to ring in the new year together. “We’ll definitely stay up to celebrate the new year. We have some plans; my family’s here. My kids are excited to go past their bedtime. We’re going to watch one of many fireworks tonight in Brisbane,” Djokovic said with a smile.

With the Australian Open just around the corner, Djokovic’s strong start in Brisbane has set the tone for his 2025 season. As he continues to chase history and add to his legendary career, all eyes will be on him to see if he can further solidify his place as one of tennis' all-time greats.

As the top seed in Brisbane, Djokovic is aiming for a strong start to his 2025 campaign, and this win sets him up well for a potential deep run in the tournament.
