Canadian Olympic gold medalist Erica Wiebe is set to visit the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) in Vijayanagar this month, where she will host a wrestling masterclass aimed at inspiring the next generation of athletes. The event is part of the second edition of the IIS Excellence Accelerator, a groundbreaking initiative designed to provide young Indian wrestlers with world-class training and mentorship.
Wiebe’s visit is especially significant as it coincides with the IIS UWW International Women's Wrestling Camp, where female wrestlers from over eight countries will participate. The camp offers an exceptional opportunity for wrestlers to enhance their skills and engage in cultural exchange with some of the best athletes in the world.
This marks the second edition of the IIS Excellence Accelerator, following the success of the inaugural edition led by Georgian judo legend Lasha Shavdatuashvili. In addition to being a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist and the 2016 Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, Erica Wiebe brings with her a wealth of experience and a strong connection to Indian wrestling. She captained the Mumbai Maharathi team in the inaugural Indian Pro Wrestling League, further strengthening her ties to the Indian wrestling community.
"We are thrilled to welcome Erica to IIS. Her journey exemplifies the commitment and resilience required to become an Olympic champion," said Manisha Malhotra, President of IIS. "This masterclass will give our young athletes firsthand exposure to her techniques and insights, not just in terms of wrestling, but also in terms of the mindset that is necessary to excel at the highest levels."
Wiebe's career highlights are truly remarkable. She had an undefeated 2014 season, clinching 36 consecutive victories, and she added two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2018 to her illustrious resume. Her Olympic gold in 2016 capped off a career that has been defined by hard work, perseverance, and excellence on the mat.
But Wiebe's impact goes beyond wrestling. As a well-rounded individual, she has earned an MBA and has worked with the Canadian Olympic Committee, providing her with valuable experience that extends beyond her athletic career. "Erica is not just a sporting legend, but also a role model for our athletes," Manisha Malhotra added. "Her story will help our young athletes understand that there is life after sports, and that they can continue to contribute to the world of athletics in meaningful ways even after they retire from competition."
The IIS Excellence Accelerator, which is supported by IndusInd Bank, aligns with IIS’s vision of nurturing India’s next generation of champions. By bringing in world-class athletes like Erica Wiebe, IIS is offering Indian wrestlers the opportunity to learn from the best in the world. The initiative emphasizes not only technical and tactical growth but also a holistic approach to development, including mental toughness, leadership, and life skills that will benefit athletes both inside and outside the arena.
Wiebe's masterclass at the camp will focus on a combination of wrestling techniques and life lessons, providing a well-rounded experience for participants. She will share her unique training methods and give the athletes invaluable insights into how she has achieved success at the highest level. Furthermore, Wiebe will also engage in discussions about how athletes can prepare for life after sports, offering advice on career development, leadership, and mentorship.
The camp is expected to be a milestone for Indian wrestling, particularly in advancing the development of female wrestlers. With women’s wrestling rapidly growing in India, this event aims to inspire more young women to pursue the sport and break barriers in what has traditionally been a male-dominated arena.
This masterclass is not just an avenue for technical learning but also an important platform for athletes to build confidence, exchange ideas, and create lasting relationships with their international peers. By hosting such world-class events, IIS is solidifying its role as a key player in the development of sports in India and ensuring that Indian athletes have the tools they need to compete on the global stage.
As the wrestling community in India continues to grow, Wiebe’s visit to the IIS Excellence Accelerator will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the athletes who have the opportunity to learn from one of the world’s best. It is a chance for the athletes to not only refine their wrestling techniques but also to gain a deeper understanding of the mindset and dedication required to achieve success in the world of elite sports.
This event marks another important step in the ongoing journey to elevate Indian wrestling to new heights, and with the support of global icons like Erica Wiebe, there is great promise for the future of the sport in the country.
