Patna Pirates secured their place in the Pro Kabaddi League 2024 playoffs with a thrilling 41-37 win over Telugu Titans on December 18 at the Badminton Hall, Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune. The victory was highlighted by an exceptional performance from green-sleeve holder Devank Dalal, who once again starred with a Super 10, leading his team through a tough contest. The win also saw strong contributions from Ankit and Deepak, who both achieved High-5s, solidifying Patna Pirates' defensive and offensive strategies.
The match began with a fast-paced start, as Devank immediately made his presence felt by scoring Patna Pirates' first four points, including a two-point raid. Telugu Titans' Pawan Sehrawat kept the game tight, matching Devank's early points, and even achieved a significant career milestone by crossing 1,300 raid points in PKL. Despite Sehrawat's best efforts, Patna Pirates quickly regained control through a Super Tackle by Ankit and a Do-Or-Die raid by Sudhakar M, which gave them a brief lead.
The game saw intense back-and-forth action, with both teams trading blows throughout the first half. Telugu Titans managed to inflict the first ALL OUT of the game, giving them a brief 10-8 lead. However, the Pirates quickly regained their composure, with Devank and Ayan pushing their team ahead. By halftime, Patna Pirates held a slender 19-18 lead.
In the second half, the momentum shifted again. Telugu Titans came back strong, with Vijay Malik's raid bringing them back to parity at the start of the half. But Patna Pirates responded with Devank and Ayan once again helping them open up a lead, and a crucial tackle from Gurdeep on Praful Zaware led to an ALL OUT, extending Patna Pirates' advantage to six points.
Patna Pirates began to build on this momentum, with Devank completing his Super 10 and Deepak reaching a major milestone of 50 Tackle Points for the season. Their defense started to dominate, as Ankit completed his High-5 and Gurdeep executed a Super Tackle, pushing their lead to a commanding seven points with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Telugu Titans made a late push, with Pawan Sehrawat, Vijay Malik, and Ashish Narwal narrowing the gap to 32-29. But Patna Pirates' defense, led by Deepak, stayed resolute in the final moments, maintaining control and ensuring their victory. The defensive efforts were crucial in the dying stages, allowing Patna Pirates to hold on for a 41-37 win.
With this victory, Patna Pirates confirmed their place in the PKL 2024 playoffs. The win also saw UP Yoddhas officially qualify for the playoffs, leaving two spots still up for grabs. Patna Pirates will look to carry this momentum into the next phase of the tournament, while Telugu Titans, despite their brave effort, will need other results to go their way if they are to make a playoff appearance.
