Top seed Senthil Kumar made a strong statement on Day 1 of the ITF World Tennis Tour J300 at the DLTA Complex, advancing to the second round with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over Japan’s Eito Komada. Despite a solid start, Kumar faced some resistance in the second set but ultimately sealed the win, much to the delight of the home crowd. His performance highlighted his dominance in the competition and set the tone for the rest of the Indian players.
Varun Verma also had a standout performance, pulling off an upset by defeating the seventh seed, Ilya Maltsev, in a tightly contested match. Verma’s resilience and composure helped him edge past his Russian opponent with a 7-5, 7-5 scoreline. The win was a testament to Verma's growing potential and showcased his ability to challenge top-ranked players. Arnav Paparkar continued the trend of Indian success by defeating Turkey’s Kerem Yilmaz in a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 victory, while Samrath Sahita also progressed, winning 6-2, 6-2 against Alan Aiukhanov. These victories ensured that four Indian boys advanced to the second round, underscoring the promising talent emerging from India’s junior tennis scene.
However, not all Indian players had a smooth run. Rian Sharma fought valiantly against fourth seed Donghyun Hwang from Korea but was ultimately defeated 5-7, 2-6. Aarav Chawla and Shanker Heisnam also faced early exits, with Heisnam falling 1-6, 2-6 to eighth seed Roman Kharlamov and Aarav losing 2-6, 1-6 to Hyeon Seok Seo of Korea. Despite these setbacks, the Indian contingent showed that they are capable of competing at the highest level, with several players still progressing through the competition.
On the international front, American Roshan Sanhosh and Russian Alexey Shibaev also advanced to the second round, proving the tournament’s global appeal. Their performances added to the highly competitive nature of the event, and with so many talented players vying for the 300 ranking points on offer, the stage was set for thrilling encounters in the days to come.
In the girls' singles, India had a mixed bag of results. Rishitha Reddy Basireddy produced a gritty performance to defeat Kazakhstan's Eva Korysheva 7-6 (4), 6-3, while Aishwarya Jadhav had a more straightforward 6-2, 6-3 win over Daria Koreshkova. Both players will look to build on these victories as the tournament progresses. However, Riya Sachdeva, Aishi Bisht, and Mahika Khanna were not as fortunate, all losing in their first-round matches. Despite their early exits, these young talents have a lot of potential, and their experiences in the tournament will only help them grow.
