Winning two gold medals is historic for Indian chess." Vidit’s calm demeanor and commitment to the team’s success have earned him praise from all corners, including renowned Indian grandmaster Pravin Thipsay, who called this current group of players the "Golden Generation of Indian Chess." While Vidit feels proud to be recognized in such terms, he remains grounded and focused on the future.

Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi has been a pivotal force behind the meteoric rise of Indian chess on the global stage in recent years. His remarkable performance at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where the Indian team clinched gold in the Open section, stands as one of the most significant achievements in the country’s chess history. Playing on Board Four, Vidit’s composed and tactical brilliance saw him amass 7.5 points from 10 games, helping India maintain an unbeaten run throughout the tournament. His contribution, both as a player and a leader, was vital to India's historic win, which Vidit humbly attributes to the collective effort of the entire team.

Reflecting on the achievement, Vidit expressed his joy over India’s breakthrough victory: "This is the first gold medal for India in both the Open and Women’s sections. The tournament was extremely competitive with 189 countries participating, sending their best players. Winning two gold medals is historic for Indian chess."

Vidit’s calm demeanor and commitment to the team’s success have earned him praise from all corners, including renowned Indian grandmaster Pravin Thipsay, who called this current group of players the "Golden Generation of Indian Chess." While Vidit feels proud to be recognized in such terms, he remains grounded and focused on the future. "It feels great, especially after winning the gold medal. Being called the Golden Generation does seem fitting, but I want to stay focused. Expectations from us will rise, but for now, I just want to enjoy this moment and keep improving."

India’s triumph at the 2024 Olympiad was a step up from their bronze medal finish in 2022, showing clear progression. Vidit credited the team’s success to their ability to learn from past mistakes and make strategic improvements: "We were constantly learning and adapting. From our 4-0 win on the first day, we built momentum and never looked back. Everyone in the team was in great form, focused on their responsibilities. Recreating this kind of performance will be difficult, but that’s what makes it special."

At 29, Vidit is enjoying one of the best periods of his career, marked by a series of impressive achievements. In the last two years alone, he has won the prestigious Grand Swiss, defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen, triumphed at the Gashimov Memorial, won a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Games, and topped it all off with a gold in the Chess Olympiad. Vidit reflects on this run of success with humility: "I had to make significant changes in myself. At one point, my game became stagnant. I worked on my personality, made sacrifices, and now, winning big medals feels like confirmation that I’m on the right path."

With the weight of expectations now heavier than ever, Vidit Gujrathi’s focus remains on the road ahead, determined to continue improving both himself and Indian chess as a whole. The gold medal at the Chess Olympiad is not just a crowning achievement but a stepping stone toward more glory.
