IOC President Kirsty Coventry said future hosts must ensure that athletes remain at the heart of planning and delivery.

India has moved into the next stage of its bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics after the International Olympic Committee confirmed the country as one of seven interested parties in the race.

The IOC announced on October 6 that India, Germany, Hungary, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, South Africa and Turkiye are currently in continuous dialogue regarding their plans to host the 2036 Olympic Games. The announcement provides greater clarity on the field of potential hosts as the IOC begins a revised selection process.

For India, the development represents an important step in its ambition to bring the Olympic Games to the country for the first time. India formally submitted its Expression of Interest to host the 2036 Olympics in 2024. Ahmedabad has been identified as the potential centre of the Indian proposal.

However, being included among the seven interested parties does not mean that India has been selected as a finalist or that it has secured the right to host the Games. The countries must now go through several stages of evaluation before the IOC makes its final decision.

The seven interested parties have been invited to present their respective Games projects to the IOC Future Host Commission in November. These presentations will allow the IOC to examine the plans in greater detail and assess whether the proposed projects can meet the requirements for hosting the world's largest multi sport event.

The IOC said the evaluation will consider several technical and strategic factors. These include venue master plans, athlete experience, funding strategies, political and public support, Games delivery capabilities and plans for creating a long term legacy for host communities.

The process is designed to examine not only existing infrastructure but also how each country proposes to organise, finance and deliver the Olympic Games. The IOC will also consider the overall vision presented by each interested party and how the proposed Games could contribute to the development of the host communities.

India will therefore need to demonstrate that its proposed Olympic plan is financially sustainable, technically capable and beneficial beyond the period of the Games.

The country's proposal is centred on Ahmedabad, which has been identified as a key location for India's Olympic ambitions. The city has also been selected as the proposed centre of India's wider plans to host major international sporting events.

The IOC has introduced a revised process for selecting the 2036 host. The current seven interested parties are expected to undergo feasibility assessments after their initial presentations. The IOC Executive Board is expected to open the Strategic Dialogue phase in March 2027 for candidates that progress through the initial evaluation.

The next major stages will take place over the following two years. The IOC plans to identify preferred hosts after further evaluation and move them into a more detailed Targeted Dialogue phase in December 2028.

The final decision is expected to be made by IOC members in mid 2029. This means the competition will continue for several years before the host of the 2036 Olympics is officially determined.

Qatar is another prominent country in the current group of interested parties. The country has hosted several major international sporting events, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and is seeking to bring the Olympic Games to the region.

Germany, Hungary, South Korea, South Africa and Turkiye complete the current list. Each country has a different Olympic hosting proposal and varying levels of experience with major international sporting events.

South Africa's potential bid has particular significance because the country would seek to become the first African nation to host the Summer Olympic Games. South Korea has already hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Germany is considering Munich as its candidate city, while Turkiye's proposal is centred on Istanbul.

The IOC has also stressed that athlete experience will remain central to the evaluation process. IOC President Kirsty Coventry said future hosts must ensure that athletes remain at the heart of planning and delivery.

The organisation has changed its approach to the host selection process compared with recent Olympic bidding cycles. The revised system includes greater involvement from IOC members and additional stages of dialogue and evaluation before the final vote.

The IOC has set October 31, 2026 as the deadline for any additional interested parties to come forward for the 2036 Games. After that deadline, the field is expected to become clearer as the current candidates develop their detailed proposals.

India's Olympic bid will now enter a critical phase. The November presentation will give Indian officials an opportunity to explain their proposed Games plan and demonstrate the country's ability to meet the IOC's requirements.

The country will also need to address questions surrounding infrastructure, financing, venue planning, transportation, accommodation, athlete facilities and the long term use of Olympic venues. The IOC's assessment framework means that a successful proposal will need to provide a comprehensive plan rather than relying solely on existing sporting infrastructure.

The 2036 Olympics are still several years away, and India faces competition from six other countries. The latest IOC announcement should therefore be viewed as an important milestone in India's bid rather than a confirmation that the country will host the Games.

The 2028 Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, while Brisbane will host the 2032 Games. The selection of the 2036 host is expected to be completed in 2029 following the IOC's multi stage evaluation and voting process.

For India, the immediate focus will be on presenting a credible and detailed Olympic proposal and progressing through the IOC's assessment stages. If India's bid advances through the Strategic Dialogue and later stages, the country could remain in contention until the final vote in 2029.

The latest announcement has therefore placed India firmly among the countries competing for the opportunity to host the 2036 Olympics. The coming months will be important as the IOC evaluates the proposals and the interested parties begin presenting their plans in greater detail.

South Korea has already hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
