Qualcomm is combining a 2nm manufacturing process, higher CPU and GPU performance, dedicated AI hardware and improved connectivity to prepare premium smartphones for more demanding AI applications.

Qualcomm has introduced its latest flagship smartphone processors, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, at the company's Snapdragon Summit 2026. The new mobile platforms are designed for the next generation of premium Android smartphones, with a major focus on on-device artificial intelligence, gaming, photography and connectivity.

The announcement marks a change in Qualcomm's flagship smartphone strategy. Instead of introducing a single premium Snapdragon platform, the company has unveiled two closely related variants. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is positioned as the broader premium platform, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 sits at the higher end with additional performance and AI-focused features.

Both platforms are manufactured using a 2nm process technology and use Qualcomm's custom Oryon CPU architecture. Qualcomm says the new processors are designed to support increasingly demanding AI applications while improving performance and power efficiency.

One of the major features highlighted by Qualcomm is agentic AI. Unlike traditional smartphone AI features that generally respond to individual commands, agentic AI is designed to understand context and complete multiple steps on behalf of the user. Qualcomm says the new Snapdragon platforms can support personalized on-device AI agents that can learn user preferences and perform tasks with reduced dependence on cloud processing.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 features a re-engineered Qualcomm Hexagon NPU for AI workloads. Qualcomm says the NPU provides a 14 percent performance improvement compared with the previous generation. The company also says its AI Engine can deliver up to 20 percent better performance per watt for agentic AI workloads.

The Extreme version takes the AI capabilities further. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 includes a Hexagon NPU that is 35 percent faster than the previous generation and can deliver up to 33 percent better performance per watt. The chip also features an enhanced Qualcomm Sensing Hub designed to support low-power, personalized AI functions directly on the device.

CPU performance is another important part of the new platform. Both versions use Qualcomm's Oryon CPU architecture, with two Prime cores capable of reaching up to 5GHz and six Performance cores. Qualcomm describes the 5GHz capability as the first time a mobile CPU has reached that clock speed.

For the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, Qualcomm reports a 10 percent improvement in CPU performance and a 37 percent improvement in CPU power efficiency compared with the previous generation. The company says its Adreno GPU delivers a 35 percent performance increase along with a 40 percent improvement in efficiency.

The Extreme model offers additional graphics performance. Qualcomm reports a 13 percent CPU performance improvement over the previous generation and a 44 percent increase in GPU performance, along with a 40 percent improvement in GPU power efficiency.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 also introduces dedicated Adreno matrix cores and Adreno Neural Fusion. These technologies are designed to support AI-powered graphics functions such as image reconstruction, super resolution and frame generation in supported games.

The Extreme platform is also aimed at smartphone users who rely heavily on video recording. Qualcomm says it supports 8K video recording at 60 frames per second and 4K video capture at up to 240 frames per second. The platform includes Qualcomm's Elite Color Engine and other image-processing technologies designed to improve video and photography quality.

The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 also receives camera-related improvements. Qualcomm says its Intelligent Pixel Control technology can analyze individual pixels and help reduce visual issues such as halos and flares. Motion Intelligence is designed to improve image stabilization by anticipating movement within a scene.

Connectivity has also received an upgrade. Both platforms use Qualcomm's X105 5G Modem-RF System. Qualcomm lists peak download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps and upload speeds of up to 4.2Gbps for the Extreme platform. The company also says the new platform supports 5G Advanced and satellite-related connectivity features.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 uses Qualcomm's FastConnect 8800 connectivity system, with the company listing peak Wi-Fi speeds of up to 11.6Gbps. The platform is designed to support newer Wi-Fi technologies as well as Bluetooth, Ultra Wideband and Thread.

Qualcomm is also positioning the new chips as a foundation for AI-powered smartphones that can perform more tasks without continuously sending user data to remote servers. Local processing can be useful for applications involving personal information because some AI workloads can be handled directly on the device. However, the actual availability of these capabilities will depend on smartphone manufacturers, software support and individual applications.

Several major smartphone brands are expected to use the new Snapdragon platforms. Qualcomm says devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will debut from brands including HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo and Xiaomi.

The Snapdragon Summit 2026 is taking place in Maui, Hawaii, from September 22 to September 24. Qualcomm has used this year's event to emphasize what it describes as the shift toward an agentic AI era, where smartphones increasingly act as intelligent assistants rather than simply serving as platforms for individual applications.

The new Snapdragon processors therefore represent more than a routine performance upgrade. Qualcomm is combining a 2nm manufacturing process, higher CPU and GPU performance, dedicated AI hardware and improved connectivity to prepare premium smartphones for more demanding AI applications.

Actual performance will depend on the smartphone, cooling system, software optimization and applications used. Qualcomm's performance and efficiency figures are comparisons made by the company against the previous generation and should be understood in that context.

The first smartphones using the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series are expected to arrive from leading Android manufacturers as the new platforms enter the premium smartphone market.

However, the actual availability of these capabilities will depend on smartphone manufacturers, software support and individual applications.
