The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has reportedly issued notices to Meta, the parent company of Instagram, over advertisements that allegedly displayed or promoted content associated with child sexual abuse material on the social media platform in India.

According to reports, the ministry has sought an explanation from Meta regarding the appearance of such advertisements and the measures being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The notices form part of the government's efforts to ensure that digital platforms comply with Indian laws and maintain adequate safeguards against illegal and harmful online content.

The issue has drawn attention because online platforms are expected to maintain strict moderation systems to detect, remove, and report content that violates national laws and community standards. Authorities have emphasized that platforms operating in India must act promptly when harmful or unlawful content is identified.

Under India's regulatory framework, digital intermediaries are required to exercise due diligence in monitoring and responding to unlawful material. The government has introduced rules that require social media companies to establish grievance mechanisms, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and remove prohibited content within prescribed timelines where applicable.

Child sexual abuse material is prohibited under Indian law, and authorities have consistently maintained a zero tolerance approach toward its creation, distribution, promotion, or facilitation. Law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies continue to strengthen efforts to identify such material and prevent its circulation across digital platforms.

Meta has previously stated that it invests significantly in content moderation technologies, including artificial intelligence systems, automated detection tools, and human review teams to identify harmful content across its platforms. The company also works with international organizations and child safety experts to improve its detection and reporting mechanisms.

Social media platforms face the ongoing challenge of reviewing billions of posts, images, videos, and advertisements while ensuring compliance with legal requirements across different jurisdictions. Technology companies regularly update their policies and moderation systems to respond to evolving online threats and misuse of digital services.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology continues to engage with technology companies on issues related to user safety, cybersecurity, online harm, and regulatory compliance. Government officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of creating a safer digital environment, particularly for children and vulnerable users.

Industry experts note that effective content moderation requires a combination of advanced technology, human oversight, user reporting systems, and close cooperation between technology companies, regulators, and law enforcement agencies. Continuous monitoring and rapid response mechanisms remain essential for addressing harmful online content.

At the time of reporting, the ministry's notices represent part of an ongoing regulatory process. Any further action will depend on the responses submitted by Meta and the outcome of the government's review. No final determination regarding regulatory action has been publicly announced.

The development highlights the increasing focus of Indian authorities on digital platform accountability and online child protection. As internet usage continues to grow across the country, regulatory agencies are expected to maintain close oversight of social media platforms to ensure compliance with applicable laws and strengthen online safety measures.
