The HDMI Forum has just announced HDMI 2.2 at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, introducing impressive upgrades for the future of TV, gaming monitors, and other display technologies. With an incredible 96Gbps data transfer speed, this new version of HDMI allows for higher resolutions, faster refresh rates, and an overall more immersive experience. This boost is especially beneficial for next-gen technologies like VR headsets, AR displays, and medical imaging equipment, where precision and high-quality visuals are critical.
One of the biggest improvements for home theater enthusiasts is the new LIP (Latency Indication Protocol), which reduces audio lag and ensures perfect audio-video synchronization, even when using external soundbars or AV receivers.
In addition to this, a new "Ultra96" cable standard will be introduced, which ensures that cables are capable of supporting the 96Gbps speed. These cables will undergo stringent testing and will be labeled to help consumers identify which cables can handle the high bandwidth.
Content creators, TV studios, and game developers will also benefit from this update, as HDMI 2.2 will offer enhanced tools for delivering higher-quality content across various screens. The new Fixed Rate Link technology ensures that the display always delivers the best possible quality, regardless of the source device.
Although HDMI 2.2 promises significant improvements, products featuring this standard will not be available until mid-2025, as manufacturers begin integrating the new technology into their devices.
