HMD is entering the satellite communication space with the launch of the OffGrid Satellite device at CES 2025, following in the footsteps of Apple’s SOS service and Xiaomi’s upcoming satellite features. The OffGrid device aims to cover areas without mobile network connectivity, working across 70% of Earth’s landmass. With its L Band satellite radio, it connects Android and iPhone users to satellite networks in remote areas, ensuring users stay connected even in the most isolated regions.
Weighing just 60g, the OffGrid device allows users to send messages, share locations, and check in with up to five contacts using its dedicated app. Messages are sent from the user’s phone number, so no additional apps are required for recipients. The device also offers a real-time GPS location sharing feature through a shared link, as well as an SOS button for emergency situations.
The OffGrid is designed with reliability and portability in mind. It offers a three-day battery life and is built to meet MIL-STD-810H military durability standards. The device can be easily set up by scanning a QR code to activate the subscription and app.
In addition to its messaging features, the OffGrid offers access to FocusPoint International’s Overwatch x Rescue™ emergency service, providing multilingual support and global search-and-rescue capabilities. According to FocusPoint’s CEO, Greg Pearson, the collaboration with HMD aims to make exploring remote areas safer by providing peace of mind through direct access to the global search-and-rescue network.
HMD OffGrid will be available for $199 (£169) on hmd.com, launching in January 2025 across the U.S., Europe, and Australia/New Zealand, with plans to expand to other markets later in the year. The device offers two subscription options:
HMD Unlimited Plan: $14.99 per month or $139.99 per year for unlimited messages, check-ins, and SOS services. Live tracking is available for an additional $4.99 per month, plus a $9.99 activation fee.
HMD Freedom Plan: $79.99 per year for 350 messages and check-ins. Live tracking is available for $4.99 per month, plus a $19.99 activation fee.
Whether hiking, skiing, or exploring off-grid locations, HMD OffGrid ensures users are never truly disconnected.
