Apple’s flagship product—the iPhone—might soon become considerably more expensive globally, including in India. This stems from former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to reintroduce high tariffs on goods imported from China, a move that could raise iPhone prices by up to 40%, warn industry analysts.
Trump, who is campaigning for re-election, has signaled an aggressive trade stance, including a potential 60% tariff on all Chinese imports. Given that a large portion of Apple’s components and assembly operations are located in China, such tariffs would directly impact production costs.
Although Apple is actively diversifying its supply chain—shifting manufacturing to countries like India and Vietnam—analysts say that the current infrastructure still relies heavily on China, especially for the iPhone. Any tariffs imposed by the U.S. would lead Apple to either absorb the cost (impacting profit margins) or pass it on to customers.
Impact on Indian Consumers:
While the tariffs are U.S.-centric, the ripple effects would be global. Apple could increase retail prices in other markets, including India, to offset the losses. This could make premium models such as the iPhone 15 Pro Max significantly more expensive, potentially reducing demand.
Moreover, Apple's India operations—though growing rapidly—may not yet be scaled enough to fully compensate for a tariff-hit China supply chain. So, Indian customers might see delayed launches or higher prices if global costs rise.
