Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Russian President Vladimir Putin with a Russian translation of the Thirukkural during their bilateral meeting in New Delhi on Friday, ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit being hosted by India.
The gift brought a major work of classical Tamil literature into the diplomatic engagement between India and Russia. Modi has frequently referred to the teachings of Thiruvalluvar and the Thirukkural in his public speeches, highlighting its messages on ethics, governance, social responsibility and human values.
The Thirukkural is traditionally attributed to the Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar. The work consists of 1,330 couplets arranged across 133 chapters. Its teachings are broadly organised into three sections covering Aram, or virtue, Porul, relating to wealth, governance and social life, and Inbam, dealing with love and personal relationships.
The Russian edition presented to Putin was published in 2026 by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil. Reports said the edition includes the original Tamil verses, transliteration and a Russian translation by Naira Mkrtchyan. The publication forms part of efforts to make important Tamil classical works available to readers in other languages.
Modi said the Russian translation would carry the wisdom of Thiruvalluvar across languages and borders. The Prime Minister described the Thirukkural as a work whose ideas continue to have relevance beyond its original linguistic and cultural setting.
The presentation of the book also added a cultural dimension to the India Russia relationship. The two countries have maintained longstanding diplomatic ties, with cooperation extending across defence, energy, trade, space, technology and other areas.
