Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy on Tuesday paid floral tributes to social reformer Periyar E V Ramasamy and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran on their death anniversary, remembering their enduring contributions to society and public life. The tribute ceremony was held in Puducherry, where portraits of both leaders were adorned with flowers in a solemn atmosphere.

Several ministers, MLAs, government officials, and supporters of various political parties were present during the event. The Chief Minister offered flowers and observed a moment of silence as a mark of respect to the two leaders, who played significant roles in shaping social and political discourse in Tamil Nadu and the broader region.

Speaking on the occasion, N Rangasamy recalled Periyar’s pioneering role in the social reform movement. He noted that Periyar fought against caste discrimination, social inequality, and superstition, and promoted rational thinking and self-respect among people. The Chief Minister said Periyar’s ideology continues to influence social justice policies and progressive thought in the region.

Rangasamy also paid tribute to M G Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR, highlighting his contributions as both a film icon and a political leader. He said MGR used his popularity to introduce several welfare schemes that benefited the poor, women, and marginalised sections of society. According to the Chief Minister, MGR’s governance model focused on inclusive development and public welfare, leaving a lasting legacy in Tamil Nadu’s political history.

The Chief Minister emphasised that remembering leaders like Periyar and MGR is important for younger generations to understand the values of social equality, compassion, and public service. He said both leaders, though different in ideology and approach, worked towards the betterment of society and the upliftment of the common people.

The event concluded with party workers and officials paying their respects and recalling anecdotes related to the lives and work of the two leaders. Similar tribute programmes were organised by various political parties and social organisations across Puducherry and Tamil Nadu to mark the death anniversary of Periyar and MGR.

Periyar E V Ramasamy, a prominent social reformer and rationalist, played a key role in challenging orthodox practices and advocating for equal rights. M G Ramachandran, a charismatic leader and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, remains remembered for his populist governance and enduring influence on Dravidian politics.
