1.3. Location Data

Sharing your device's location is optional. We do not save the location your phone or browser shares in our database, link it to your account, or use it for advertising. (The country, state, city and postcode you can enter in your profile are separate: those are saved with your account.) Our servers keep copies of lookups, such as which district a 5 km square is in or the weather for a place, so they need not be repeated, but not who asked. Like any web request, it can appear briefly in our hosting provider's technical logs.

In the People Plus Press mobile app: the app can show news from your area first, and the weather for your area. This happens only if you tap "Use my location" on the home screen or turn on Local news in Settings, and your phone asks for your permission first.

• The app asks only for your phone's approximate location, never for precise (GPS) location, and uses it only while you are using the app, never in the background.

• Before it leaves your phone, the location is rounded to a grid of about 5 km. Our server finds which district and state that point is in, using OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. The app then shows recent stories from your district (or your state) at the top of the home feed, and the weather for that place.

• The app remembers the area it found (district, state and place name) on your phone. It looks the area up again only while Local news is on: once it is more than six hours old, or ten minutes after a lookup that failed.

• You can turn it off at any time in the app's Settings → Local news, which also deletes the remembered area, or by removing the location permission in your phone's settings.

On this website: the weather shown in the header and on the home page uses your location if you allow it. Your browser asks for your permission first; if you decline, the site works as usual without local weather.

• Before it leaves your browser, the position is rounded to a grid of about 5 km, as in the app. Our server sends that point to OpenWeather for the weather and air quality, and to Google's Geocoding service (or OpenStreetMap's Nominatim, if that fails) to find the name of your city.

• The city name and the weather are kept in this browser tab's session storage for up to ten minutes, so they are not looked up again on every page, and are gone when you close the tab. You can withdraw the permission at any time in your browser's site settings.

1.4. Automatically Collected Data

When you access or use the Services, we may automatically collect information, such as:

• Log files, including your IP address, browser type, referring/exit pages, and clickstream data

• Cookies and similar tracking technologies that collect and track information about your interaction with the Services

For location features these are OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service (which district or city a location is in), OpenWeather (weather and air quality) and, on the website only, Google's Geocoding service (the name of the city for a location). They receive only a location or place name, sent by our server, not your name, email address or account.

We may share your information with affiliated companies or business partners who help us provide our Services.

5.1. Google Play Store

Our mobile app complies with Google's Developer Policy and Privacy Requirements. Sensitive information, such as financial details, will not be collected without user consent. The app never asks for precise (GPS) location, and asks for approximate location only if you choose to see local news. Notifications will appear before accessing sensitive features like the camera or microphone.

5.2. Apple App Store

Our mobile app complies with Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines, providing full transparency about data collection. Users will be notified when their data is being collected, and no data will be shared with third parties without explicit consent.

5.3. Google News

We follow Google News’ publisher policies, adhering to strict user data protection standards.

We retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy, or as required by law. After the retention period, your data will be securely deleted or anonymized.

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your personal data from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. However, no method of internet transmission or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
