In Tamil Nadu, the School Education Department has introduced quiz competitions to improve the reading abilities of students in government schools. The initiative aims to enhance the reading skills of students from classes 1 to 8 by regularly providing specialized magazines and conducting quiz competitions based on reading materials. The department has been distributing the "Uinchal" magazine for students in classes 1 to 5 and "Then Chittu" for students in classes 6 to 8 every 15 days.
While this initiative has been positively received in government-run schools, aided schools have been excluded from participating in these quiz competitions. The department provides one magazine per class, and if the number of students exceeds the available copies, additional magazines are supplied. However, aided schools have not been included in the distribution, which has sparked concern among students and parents.
These quiz competitions are an integral part of the program and cover various topics, including general knowledge, current affairs, and other educational subjects. Schools can form two teams with four members each, where one team competes in the "Then Chittu" and daily newspapers section, and the other team competes in the general knowledge and current affairs section.
Although this initiative is being implemented in government schools, aided institutions have been overlooked. Parents and community members are voicing their concerns, urging the authorities to ensure that all students, regardless of the type of school, have equal access to resources and opportunities to develop their reading and general knowledge skills. They are calling for the inclusion of aided schools in these quiz events to promote a fair and inclusive educational environment across Tamil Nadu.
