The goal of this collaboration is to integrate ASSB technology into future BMW electric models, with production expected later in the decade.

BMW Group and Colorado-based battery technology company Solid Power have entered a new phase in their ongoing collaboration by initiating vehicle testing of all-solid-state battery (ASSB) cells. These advanced batteries are now being integrated into a prototype version of the BMW i7 luxury electric sedan to evaluate their real-world performance.

The move marks a significant milestone in BMW’s push toward next-generation electric mobility. All-solid-state batteries are considered the future of electric vehicle (EV) technology, offering improved energy density, longer driving range, faster charging, and enhanced safety compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

About the Collaboration

BMW and Solid Power have been partners since 2017, working together to develop and eventually commercialize all-solid-state batteries. In 2021, BMW made a strategic investment in Solid Power and has since been actively participating in the development process. The goal of this collaboration is to integrate ASSB technology into future BMW electric models, with production expected later in the decade.

Solid Power's unique approach involves replacing the flammable liquid electrolyte used in conventional batteries with a solid electrolyte, which improves thermal stability and reduces the risk of fires. These batteries also enable the use of lithium metal anodes, which are more energy-dense than graphite.

BMW i7: The Testbed for Innovation

The BMW i7, the all-electric flagship sedan from BMW’s 7 Series lineup, has been selected as the prototype platform for these tests. Engineers are evaluating the ASSB cells in terms of thermal management, charging behavior, range performance, and durability under real-world driving conditions.

The vehicle tests aim to bridge the gap between laboratory research and mass production. Data collected during this phase will help optimize the battery packs and ensure they meet the rigorous standards required for commercial EV deployment.

Why All-Solid-State Batteries Matter

Solid-state batteries are widely viewed as a game-changer in the EV sector. Their advantages include:

Increased Energy Density: Allows for longer driving ranges on a single charge.

Improved Safety: Reduced fire risk due to the absence of liquid electrolytes.

Faster Charging: Potential for significantly reduced charging times.

Longer Lifespan: Greater durability and cycle life than conventional batteries.

These benefits could help overcome many of the current limitations of EVs and encourage wider adoption globally, including in markets like India where battery safety and range anxiety remain key concerns.

Looking Ahead

BMW aims to have a demonstrator vehicle equipped with solid-state batteries on the road well before the end of this decade. The company is also working to establish scalable manufacturing processes for the mass production of ASSB cells, in line with its electrification strategy.

This latest development strengthens BMW's position in the global EV race and highlights the growing importance of technological partnerships in advancing sustainable mobility. With testing underway, the transition to solid-state battery-powered vehicles is now one step closer to becoming a commercial reality.

These benefits could help overcome many of the current limitations of EVs and encourage wider adoption globally, including in markets like India where battery safety and range anxiety remain key concerns.
