Hyundai Motor India, which had been closely trailing Mahindra in recent months, managed to regain the second position in terms of retail sales.

Car retail sales in India experienced a minor dip in July 2025, reflecting a shift in consumer sentiment and seasonal variations. According to the latest data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, the industry saw a slight slowdown compared to June 2025. While the overall decline was marginal, it provided insights into changing market dynamics and brand positioning in the competitive automotive sector.

Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the market as the leading car manufacturer, maintaining its strong presence across entry-level and mid-range segments. The brand’s consistent performance has been driven by a wide product portfolio and its established dealer network. Models like the Swift, WagonR and Baleno remained popular among buyers due to their reliability and fuel efficiency.

Hyundai Motor India, which had been closely trailing Mahindra in recent months, managed to regain the second position in terms of retail sales. The company benefited from strong demand for its SUV range, including the Creta and Venue, along with steady interest in its premium hatchback offerings. Hyundai’s focus on offering updated features and technology-driven vehicles appears to have resonated with urban consumers.

Mahindra and Mahindra, despite a slight fall in retail numbers, continued to perform well in the SUV segment. Models like the Scorpio N, XUV700 and Thar remained in demand, particularly in semi-urban and rural markets. However, supply-side challenges and longer waiting periods for some models may have impacted its month-on-month performance.

Industry experts suggest that the marginal drop in car sales during July could be linked to seasonal factors such as monsoon-related disruptions and cautious consumer spending ahead of the festive season. Analysts expect a recovery in demand starting in September, with the onset of key festivals and new vehicle launches lined up by major carmakers.

The electric vehicle segment also continued to show growth, although its overall share in the market remains relatively small. Brands like Tata Motors and MG are steadily expanding their EV offerings and dealership presence. While the adoption rate is improving, infrastructure and affordability still remain key concerns for mass-market penetration.

Dealers across the country noted that footfall in showrooms remained moderate, and financing trends were stable. Many customers were observed to be in a wait-and-watch mode, either expecting price corrections or upcoming festive discounts. Manufacturers are expected to roll out aggressive marketing campaigns and limited-period offers to boost sales in the coming months.

Despite the marginal decline in July 2025, the long-term outlook for the Indian automotive market remains positive. Consumer preference is shifting toward feature-rich and technologically advanced vehicles, and brands that can meet these expectations are likely to gain a stronger foothold.

As the industry gears up for the festive season, all eyes will be on new launches, pricing strategies and delivery timelines that could define market performance in the next quarter.
