India’s passenger vehicle market maintained a positive trajectory in February 2026, recording total sales of 4,20,523 units, representing a year-on-year growth of 10.46 percent over the 3,80,689 units sold in the same month last year. The growth was primarily supported by sustained demand for SUVs, continued product launches, and strategic expansion by key automakers. Despite the positive annual growth, sales declined compared to January 2026, which had recorded 4,52,589 units, showing a 7.09 percent month-on-month reduction of 32,066 units. Analysts attribute the sequential decline to seasonal fluctuations, festival-period demand pullback, and inventory adjustments by dealerships.
Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the Indian passenger vehicle market, retaining its top position with strong sales across compact, mid-size, and SUV segments. The company’s popular models, including the Baleno, Brezza, and Alto, contributed significantly to its monthly performance. Tata Motors secured the second spot, driven by robust demand for Nexon, Punch, and Harrier models, reflecting growing consumer interest in SUVs with modern features and safety enhancements. Mahindra followed closely, with its XUV series and Thar continuing to attract buyers, especially in rural and semi-urban markets.
Other leading carmakers such as Hyundai, Kia, Honda, and Toyota also contributed to overall sales, with consistent performance in premium and mid-size segments. Industry observers note that the rising preference for compact SUVs, feature-rich hatchbacks, and efficient petrol engines has reshaped the sales dynamics in India. Furthermore, government incentives for electric vehicles and low-emission models have started influencing purchasing decisions, with early adoption of EVs showing modest but steady growth.
Despite the month-on-month dip, the broader annual outlook remains strong. Analysts expect the Indian automotive sector to continue expanding due to rising disposable income, increasing urbanization, and the growing importance of personal mobility solutions. The SUV segment is likely to remain a key growth driver, given consumer preference for higher ground clearance, safety features, and versatile performance for both city and highway conditions.
Dealership strategies, model refreshes, and financing options have played an important role in sustaining consumer interest. Companies are also leveraging digital platforms for bookings, virtual showrooms, and customer engagement, helping mitigate the impact of inventory and seasonal slowdowns.
Looking ahead, March and the second quarter of 2026 are expected to witness increased demand, particularly with new model launches and promotional schemes timed ahead of summer travel and festival seasons. Analysts predict that with robust product pipelines and favorable market conditions, India’s passenger vehicle market is likely to maintain a double-digit annual growth rate, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the fastest-growing automotive markets globally.
