Among major manufacturers, Mahindra recorded strong growth and improved its standing in the domestic market, while Hyundai saw a relative decline in sales momentum and market share.

The Indian automobile industry witnessed significant changes in 2025, with shifts in brand performance reflecting evolving consumer preferences and competitive strategies. Among major manufacturers, Mahindra recorded strong growth and improved its standing in the domestic market, while Hyundai saw a relative decline in sales momentum and market share.

Mahindra’s rise was largely driven by sustained demand for its SUV portfolio. Models such as the Scorpio-N, Thar, Bolero Neo, and XUV700 continued to attract buyers across urban and rural markets. The company benefited from its focus on rugged design, strong road presence, and improved safety standards. Mahindra’s emphasis on addressing supply constraints and reducing waiting periods also helped convert bookings into actual sales more efficiently during the year.

In addition, Mahindra’s strategy of expanding its product range and offering feature-rich variants appealed to younger buyers and families alike. The brand’s growing emphasis on safety ratings and advanced technology further strengthened customer confidence. Analysts note that Mahindra successfully capitalised on the SUV-driven growth trend, which remained the dominant force in India’s passenger vehicle market in 2025.

Hyundai, on the other hand, faced increased competition from both established players and newer entrants. While the company continued to perform well in certain segments, its overall growth was impacted by slower refresh cycles for some key models and rising competition in the compact and mid-size SUV categories. Consumers increasingly favoured vehicles with higher ground clearance, advanced infotainment systems, and enhanced safety features, areas where rivals gained an edge.

Despite these challenges, Hyundai maintained a strong brand presence and continued to rely on its wide dealer network and after-sales service. However, industry observers believe that the company may need to accelerate product updates and introduce new offerings to regain momentum. The competition intensified further as Indian and global manufacturers expanded their SUV lineups and adopted aggressive pricing strategies.

The broader market trends in 2025 pointed to a shift away from traditional hatchbacks toward SUVs and crossovers. Buyers showed growing interest in vehicles offering a balance of performance, comfort, and technology. Safety features such as multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and driver assistance systems gained prominence in purchase decisions.

Experts say the contrasting performance of Mahindra and Hyundai underscores the importance of aligning product strategies with market demand. Manufacturers that responded quickly to changing preferences were better positioned to grow, while others faced pressure to adapt. As the Indian auto market continues to evolve, competition is expected to intensify further, with innovation and customer-centric offerings playing a key role in shaping future rankings.

Analysts note that Mahindra successfully capitalised on the SUV-driven growth trend, which remained the dominant force in India’s passenger vehicle market in 2025.
