Maruti Suzuki, India's leading car manufacturer, is gearing up to expand its SUV lineup with the launch of a new model called the Escudo. According to reports, the new SUV will be positioned below the Grand Vitara and will directly compete with popular models such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Honda Elevate in the highly competitive mid-size SUV segment.
The Escudo is expected to be based on Suzuki’s Global C platform, which is already being used in the Grand Vitara and other international models. This platform offers better structural rigidity, improved driving dynamics, and enhanced safety features, making it a suitable foundation for a modern urban SUV.
Maruti Suzuki is likely to offer the Escudo with hybrid technology, following the success of its strong and mild hybrid powertrains in existing models. The new SUV could come with a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with either a mild hybrid system or a full hybrid setup. This approach is in line with Maruti Suzuki’s push towards offering more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles.
In terms of design, the Escudo may carry a modern SUV stance with bold exterior styling. Features could include LED headlamps, a sporty grille, roof rails, dual-tone paint options, and stylish alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin is expected to offer premium features such as a large touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, automatic climate control, connected car technology, and advanced safety features including multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, and electronic stability control.
Maruti Suzuki’s decision to position the Escudo below the Grand Vitara is strategic. It allows the company to offer a mid-size SUV with a competitive price tag while appealing to buyers looking for a feature-rich yet affordable vehicle. Industry experts believe that the Escudo will target customers who want an SUV with modern looks and hybrid technology without stretching their budget too far.
The company may offer multiple variants to cater to different price points, including manual and automatic transmission options. As with other Maruti models, the Escudo is also expected to benefit from the brand’s widespread service network and strong resale value.
The launch of the Escudo is expected to take place in the coming months, possibly during the upcoming festive season, which is a peak time for vehicle purchases in India. Once launched, it will join Maruti Suzuki’s growing SUV lineup alongside the Fronx, Brezza, and Grand Vitara.
Overall, the introduction of the Maruti Suzuki Escudo is likely to intensify competition in the mid-size SUV segment. With the right mix of design, features, performance, and pricing, the new Escudo could emerge as a strong player in one of India’s most dynamic car markets.
