Safety has become a key factor, and Maruti Suzuki’s decision to upgrade the Wagon R will resonate well in the current market,” said auto analyst Raghav Mehta.

Maruti Suzuki, India’s leading carmaker, has introduced significant safety upgrades to its best-selling hatchback, the Wagon R. The move comes as part of the company’s effort to stay ahead of upcoming regulatory changes and meet growing consumer demand for better safety standards in budget vehicles.

The 2025 Wagon R model now comes equipped with several key safety enhancements. Among the most notable are Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Hill Hold Assist—features previously limited to premium models. These technologies improve vehicle handling during emergency maneuvers and prevent rollback on slopes, respectively, offering greater confidence to drivers.

In addition, Maruti has reinforced the car’s body structure to offer better crash protection. This includes stronger impact-absorbing zones and improved seatbelt mechanisms. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and a high-speed alert system now come as standard across all variants. These updates align with the government’s safety regulations and aim to earn improved crash test ratings for the popular hatchback.

Maruti Suzuki officials highlighted that the upgrades were introduced after extensive consumer feedback and internal research. “Wagon R has always been a trusted family car in India. By adding advanced safety features, we aim to make it not only economical and spacious but also one of the safest in its class,” said a senior executive from Maruti Suzuki.

The refreshed Wagon R continues to offer two petrol engine options — 1.0L and 1.2L — along with CNG variants. While the mechanicals remain largely unchanged, the added weight from reinforced safety components has been offset by optimization in engine tuning to ensure minimal impact on mileage.

Industry experts have lauded the move, noting that budget-conscious buyers are now increasingly aware of safety ratings and crash test performances. “Consumers are no longer just looking at price and mileage. Safety has become a key factor, and Maruti Suzuki’s decision to upgrade the Wagon R will resonate well in the current market,” said auto analyst Raghav Mehta.

Visually, the Wagon R remains largely the same, except for minor design tweaks and an updated infotainment system in top variants. The model continues to appeal to urban families and first-time buyers, now with the added assurance of enhanced safety.

Bookings for the updated Wagon R are now open at Maruti dealerships across India, and deliveries are expected to begin later this month. Prices have been revised slightly upward, reflecting the inclusion of new safety tech, but Maruti maintains the car remains competitive in its segment.

These updates align with the government’s safety regulations and aim to earn improved crash test ratings for the popular hatchback.
