In a significant update concerning Tesla’s much-anticipated entry into the Indian market, the company has reportedly cancelled all existing vehicle bookings and started issuing full refunds to customers. The decision has left many Indian Tesla enthusiasts disappointed, as the automaker’s plans to launch electric vehicles in India appear to be facing renewed delays.
Customers who had pre-booked Tesla vehicles through the company’s official website have received emails confirming the cancellation of their bookings. The communications indicate that the refund process has already begun and that the entire booking amount will be credited back to the original payment method used by the customer.
Tesla had initially opened bookings in India in 2021, following years of speculation regarding its market entry. The company even registered a local entity, Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd, and appointed top executives to oversee its India operations. Multiple reports had suggested that Tesla was exploring manufacturing options within India, while also negotiating with the government for import duty reductions on electric vehicles.
However, progress on these fronts remained limited. Disagreements between Tesla and Indian authorities, particularly over import duties and local manufacturing commitments, are believed to be among the key reasons for the delay. Tesla reportedly wanted to test demand by selling imported vehicles before setting up a local manufacturing facility, while the Indian government maintained its position that domestic production is essential to gain duty benefits.
Over the past two years, the status of Tesla’s operations in India has remained unclear. While the company continued to show interest in the Indian market, there has been little on-ground activity to suggest an imminent launch. As a result, customer confidence began to waver, with many seeking clarity on the status of their bookings.
The recent cancellation of bookings and initiation of refunds suggest that Tesla may be re-evaluating its India strategy. Analysts believe the move could be temporary, and that Tesla might consider re-entering the market at a later stage with a revised approach. Others view the cancellation as a sign that the company is focusing on other global priorities, such as its expansion in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
For Indian customers, the refund process has so far been smooth. Tesla has maintained transparency in its communication, informing users via email about the timeline for refunds and offering customer support in case of queries. Most customers are expected to receive the refunded amount within 5–10 business days, depending on the mode of payment.
Industry watchers are closely monitoring the situation to understand Tesla’s long-term plans for India. Despite the current setback, India remains a key potential market for electric vehicles, and a future re-entry by Tesla cannot be ruled out.
For now, Indian EV buyers will need to look at existing domestic and international players operating in the country as they await further developments from Tesla.
