Industry experts attribute the overall growth to several factors.

India’s automobile industry closed December 2025 with encouraging numbers, highlighting sustained consumer demand across key passenger vehicle segments. According to industry data, the top 10 cars and SUVs sold a combined total of 1,80,758 units during the month, registering a significant year-on-year growth of 30.7 per cent compared to 1,38,357 units sold in December 2024.

The sales performance reflects continued recovery in the auto sector, supported by stable economic conditions, improved semiconductor availability, and strong buyer interest in both hatchbacks and compact SUVs. December traditionally benefits from year-end offers and inventory push by manufacturers, further boosting volumes.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno emerged as one of the top performers, maintaining its position as one of India’s most preferred premium hatchbacks. Known for its fuel efficiency, spacious cabin and competitive pricing, the Baleno continued to attract urban and semi-urban buyers alike. Close behind was the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, which has gained traction for its crossover styling and wide engine options, appealing to younger consumers.

Tata Nexon also featured prominently among the top-selling models. The compact SUV has consistently delivered strong numbers, supported by its safety credentials, multiple powertrain choices including electric variants, and periodic feature upgrades. Nexon’s steady demand highlights the growing preference for SUVs in the Indian market.

Other models in the top 10 list included a mix of hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs from leading manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai and Mahindra. The continued dominance of Maruti Suzuki models underlined the brand’s extensive dealership network and strong after-sales support, while Tata Motors benefited from rising trust in its build quality and safety ratings.

Industry experts attribute the overall growth to several factors. Improved supply chain stability allowed manufacturers to meet pent-up demand that had previously been impacted by production constraints. Additionally, attractive year-end discounts, exchange offers and flexible financing schemes encouraged buyers to advance their purchase decisions.

The rise in SUV sales once again reinforced changing consumer preferences, with buyers increasingly opting for higher ground clearance, enhanced safety features and road presence. At the same time, premium hatchbacks continued to remain relevant due to their affordability and practicality in urban settings.

Looking ahead, analysts expect demand to remain steady in early 2026, although factors such as fuel prices, interest rates and upcoming regulatory changes could influence buyer sentiment. Automakers are also preparing to launch refreshed models and new variants to sustain momentum in a competitive market.

Overall, December 2025 proved to be a strong month for India’s passenger vehicle industry, setting a positive tone for the new calendar year.
