India’s passenger car industry closed December 2025 with impressive retail numbers, underscoring the sector’s strong recovery and sustained consumer demand.

India’s passenger car industry closed December 2025 with impressive retail numbers, underscoring the sector’s strong recovery and sustained consumer demand. According to industry data, total retail car sales stood at 4,04,231 units, representing a sharp year-on-year growth of 25.8 percent compared to 3,21,345 units sold in December 2024.

Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the Indian passenger vehicle market, maintaining its position as the country’s largest carmaker. The company benefited from steady demand for its hatchbacks, compact sedans, and utility vehicles across urban and rural markets. Strong dealership reach and attractive financing options further supported sales performance.

Mahindra emerged as the second-highest-selling carmaker for the month, driven primarily by strong demand for its SUV portfolio. Models such as the Scorpio, XUV series, and Bolero continued to attract buyers, particularly in semi-urban and rural regions. Mahindra’s consistent focus on utility vehicles has helped the brand strengthen its market presence.

Tata Motors secured the third position, supported by stable demand for its passenger vehicles and electric vehicle lineup. Tata’s compact SUVs and hatchbacks remained popular among buyers, while its growing EV portfolio continued to gain traction amid rising interest in sustainable mobility.

Other carmakers also posted notable year-on-year growth, reflecting broad-based improvement across the industry. However, despite the strong annual performance, month-on-month sales saw some moderation. Industry experts attribute this to seasonal trends, year-end inventory adjustments, and cautious consumer spending ahead of the new calendar year.

The strong December performance capped a year of recovery for the Indian automobile sector, which benefited from improved supply chains, better semiconductor availability, and growing consumer confidence. Attractive festive offers, new model launches, and expanding rural demand also contributed to the positive momentum.

Industry analysts expect the passenger vehicle market to remain stable in the coming months, though challenges such as input cost pressures and changing regulatory norms may influence pricing strategies. Carmakers are also expected to focus on launching new models and expanding electric and hybrid offerings in 2026.

Overall, December 2025 retail sales figures highlight the resilience of India’s automobile market, with leading manufacturers continuing to adapt to evolving consumer preferences and market conditions.
