VinFast VF5 Electric SUV Design Patent Filed in India, Launch Possibility Explained
Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has filed a design patent in India for the updated VF5 electric SUV. The filing has increased speculation that the compact electric vehicle could eventually enter the Indian market. The patented design reveals several exterior changes, including slimmer headlamps, a redesigned bonnet, revised bumpers and updated LED tail lamps.
The development comes after the facelifted VF5 was spotted undergoing testing overseas. Reports of test vehicles and the Indian design patent have strengthened expectations that VinFast may be evaluating the model for India. However, a design patent does not confirm a commercial launch. The company has not officially announced the VF5's India launch date, battery specifications or price.
VinFast VF5 Exterior Design Changes
The updated VinFast VF5 is expected to feature a refreshed exterior while retaining the overall shape of the existing model. The most noticeable changes are at the front, where the headlamps appear slimmer and sit lower than those on the current international version.
The black elements beneath the headlights have also been revised to blend more smoothly into the lower bumper. The bonnet appears taller and more angular, giving the vehicle a stronger SUV-inspired appearance.
At the rear, the updated model is expected to receive chunkier connected LED tail lamps. The reverse lights and turn indicators may also be integrated into the rear lighting units rather than positioned separately on the bumper.
The side profile is expected to remain broadly similar to the existing VF5, although the alloy wheel design appears to have been revised. Overseas test vehicles have reportedly been seen with 16-inch wheels.
These changes are intended to give the electric SUV a more contemporary appearance. However, the final design and equipment offered in India may differ from the versions shown in international patent images.
Interior and Expected Features
The updated VF5's cabin could receive more substantial changes than its exterior. Images of test vehicles spotted overseas suggest a redesigned dashboard with a larger, free-standing infotainment touchscreen.
The vehicle is also expected to feature a redesigned two-spoke steering wheel with flattened upper and lower sections. The centre console appears to have a revised layout, including a rotary drive selector and two cup holders.
Another reported change concerns the driver's display. The updated model may not have a separate instrument screen, with some driving information instead displayed through the central touchscreen. The final Indian specification has not been confirmed.
The test vehicle has also been seen with leatherette seat upholstery, potentially replacing the fabric seats offered in some existing versions. This could give the cabin a more premium appearance.
Other equipment, including the infotainment system, connected features, air conditioning and safety technology, will be important in determining the VF5's competitiveness in India. Buyers will need to wait for an official announcement to learn which features will be included in the Indian version.
Battery, Motor and Driving Range
The VinFast VF5 is sold internationally with different battery and motor configurations. This means the specifications of a potential Indian version cannot yet be confirmed.
In Indonesia, one version uses a 29.6 kWh battery pack paired with a front-mounted electric motor producing approximately 90 hp and 135 Nm of torque. Its claimed driving range is around 268 km under the applicable test cycle.
In other markets, the VF5 is available with a larger 37.23 kWh battery pack and an electric motor producing approximately 136 hp and 135 Nm of torque. This configuration has a claimed range of around 326 km under the NEDC test cycle.
These figures relate to international versions and should not be treated as confirmed Indian specifications. Driving range can also vary depending on the testing method, traffic, temperature, driving style and use of climate control.
VinFast has yet to confirm which battery pack or motor configuration it would offer in India. The final range, charging performance and charging compatibility will be important factors for buyers considering the electric SUV.
Expected Price and India Launch Timeline
The VF5's Indian launch remains unconfirmed. Automotive reports have suggested an expected price of approximately Rs 10 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, positioning it within the more affordable electric vehicle segment.
This price range is only an estimate and is not an official announcement from VinFast. The final price would depend on the battery configuration, features, import or local assembly arrangements, and the company's market strategy.
The design patent could indicate that VinFast is protecting the updated model's appearance in India while evaluating future opportunities. However, manufacturers can register designs without immediately introducing the corresponding vehicle in that market.
The launch timeline also remains uncertain. Reports have suggested that the model could arrive around the end of 2026 or in 2027, but VinFast has not confirmed a date. Customers should therefore treat these timelines as expectations rather than a firm launch schedule.

Expected Rivals in India
If VinFast launches the VF5 in India at the reported price, it could compete with several compact electric vehicles already available or targeting the same segment.
Potential rivals include the Tata Punch EV, Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV. These models offer Indian buyers different combinations of battery capacity, driving range, features and pricing.
The VF5's success would depend on its final price, real-world range, charging support, safety equipment and after-sales network. A competitive price alone may not be enough, as buyers also consider service accessibility, warranty coverage and the cost of ownership.
VinFast has already established a presence in India with models such as the VF6 and VF7. Introducing a smaller electric vehicle could help the company address a different section of the market if the model meets local customer requirements.
The VF5 could appeal to buyers looking for a compact electric vehicle with SUV-inspired styling. However, its suitability will only become clear once the company confirms its specifications and launch plans.
What the Design Patent Means for Buyers
The Indian design patent is an important development because it reveals the styling of the updated VF5 and adds to reports suggesting that the vehicle is being considered for the market. Nevertheless, patent registration alone does not guarantee that the SUV will be launched in India.
The next major details to watch for are an official launch announcement, confirmation of the Indian battery and motor specifications, pricing, charging options and dealership availability.
For now, the updated VinFast VF5 remains a potential addition to India's electric vehicle market rather than a confirmed launch. If introduced with competitive pricing and suitable range, it could provide buyers with another option in the compact electric SUV segment.
