Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has taken a significant step towards expanding its presence in the Indian automobile market by securing a design patent for the Leopard 8 plug in hybrid electric vehicle. The patent application was submitted on September 30 2024 and received approval on April 24 2026. This development has sparked discussions about the possible launch of the premium SUV in India.
The Leopard 8 is a luxury off road sport utility vehicle built on a body on frame platform, which is typically used for vehicles designed to handle rough terrain and demanding driving conditions. This makes it a strong competitor in the premium SUV segment, where durability and performance are key factors. If introduced in India, the Leopard 8 could rival established models in the luxury off road category.
In international markets, the same vehicle is marketed under different brand names. It is known as the Fangchengbao Bao 8 and the Denza B8 depending on the region. These branding variations reflect BYD strategy of positioning the vehicle differently across markets while maintaining the core design and engineering features.
The plug in hybrid electric vehicle system used in the Leopard 8 combines a conventional internal combustion engine with an electric motor. This setup allows the vehicle to offer improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared to traditional petrol or diesel vehicles. At the same time, it ensures sufficient power and range, which are important for long distance travel and off road performance.
The design patent approval in India does not guarantee an immediate launch, but it is often considered an important step for automakers planning to introduce new models in the market. By securing intellectual property rights, companies protect their design elements and prepare for future commercial activities.
The Indian automobile market has seen a steady increase in demand for premium SUVs and environmentally friendly vehicles. With the government encouraging electric mobility and hybrid technologies, global manufacturers are exploring opportunities to bring advanced vehicles into the country. BYD has already established a presence in India with its electric cars and is gradually expanding its portfolio.
If the Leopard 8 is launched in India, it could attract buyers looking for a combination of luxury, performance and eco friendly technology. The vehicle design, off road capabilities and hybrid powertrain could make it a strong contender in its segment.
Industry experts believe that BYD move to patent the Leopard 8 design indicates long term plans for the Indian market. However, official confirmation regarding the launch timeline, pricing and specifications is still awaited.
