With the IONIQ 6 N, Hyundai aims to redefine what electric performance can look and feel like, setting a benchmark for future electric sports sedans in the industry.

Hyundai Motor has taken a major step in expanding its electric vehicle (EV) lineup by unveiling the IONIQ 6 N, a high-performance variant of its popular electric sedan, at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom. The debut marks Hyundai’s formal entry into the performance EV category under its N sub-brand, which has historically been associated with petrol-powered sports models.

The IONIQ 6 N is based on the award-winning IONIQ 6 platform but has been extensively re-engineered to meet the standards of high-performance driving. It is powered by dual electric motors delivering significantly more horsepower than the regular version, and features an all-wheel drive system for enhanced handling and traction. Acceleration is brisk, with a 0 to 100 kilometres per hour time estimated at under four seconds, placing it in direct competition with other performance EVs in the global market.

The car’s battery cooling system and thermal management have also been upgraded to withstand the rigours of track use. Hyundai has included features like N Grin Boost and N Launch Control, allowing drivers to optimize performance in controlled bursts. The system has been tested extensively at racetracks worldwide to ensure it can deliver both everyday comfort and circuit-ready performance.

From a design perspective, the IONIQ 6 N retains the aerodynamic silhouette of the standard model but introduces a more aggressive exterior. New features include sportier bumpers, a rear wing, larger wheels, and special badging that sets it apart visually. The interior receives performance-themed enhancements as well, such as bucket seats, N-specific digital displays, and driver-focused controls that give it a motorsport-inspired character.

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where automotive innovation and engineering are celebrated annually, the IONIQ 6 N made a strong impression. Hyundai’s engineers and brand representatives highlighted that the new model demonstrates how electrification and performance can coexist without compromise. The vehicle took part in the famous hill climb, showcasing its capabilities in real-world driving scenarios.

The unveiling of the IONIQ 6 N is part of Hyundai’s broader strategy to lead in the EV space by offering a diverse range of models. While the IONIQ 5 N was the brand’s first step into performance EVs, the IONIQ 6 N is expected to appeal to a wider audience of driving enthusiasts and eco-conscious consumers alike.

Hyundai has confirmed that the IONIQ 6 N will go into production soon and is expected to launch in select international markets later this year. Indian EV buyers may have to wait, as the company continues to evaluate demand and infrastructure suitability before introducing N performance models in the country.
