Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced a buyback scheme for early buyers of its special‑edition BE 6 Batman Edition electric SUV amid customer backlash over the reintroduction of the model just months after its initial launch. The company’s move is aimed at addressing concerns raised by founding owners and restoring trust in the “limited‑edition” offering.

The BE 6 Batman Edition was first revealed in August 2025 in collaboration with Warner Bros Discovery Global Consumer Products, inspired by the iconic Batman franchise. It was positioned as a collector’s item with a planned run of only 999 units, all of which were booked shortly after reservations opened. The vehicle received attention for its themed decals, emblems and unique styling cues grounded in the Dark Knight motif, on top of the underlying BE 6 electric SUV’s standard hardware.

However, Mahindra surprised the market in March 2026 by relaunching the Batman Edition with another batch of 999 units, drawing swift demand with bookings selling out within minutes. While the company cited enthusiastic response and continued interest from customers as the basis for the new batch, early owners expressed dissatisfaction across social platforms and forums, stating that the “limited‑edition” status of their purchases was undermined by the subsequent release.

In response to the criticism, Mahindra announced that original BE 6 Batman Edition buyers would be offered a full buyback of their vehicles if they choose to participate. The buyback window opens from March 18, 2026 and remains valid for 30 days. Owners interested in the buyback must contact their respective dealerships to begin the process and understand specific terms and conditions.

The buyback option is being offered exclusively to the first batch of buyers who had purchased from the initial allocation. According to car industry sources, the decision reflects the company’s intent to maintain strong customer relationships and manage reputational risk after the unexpected controversy surrounding the limited edition’s positioning.

The BE 6 Batman Edition is powered by the BE 6’s 79 kWh battery pack, offering an ARAI‑claimed range of approximately 682 kilometres. The electric SUV retains the same technical specifications as the regular Pack Three variant of the BE 6, with performance, charging options and standard EV features unaltered. The edition’s distinguishing elements are predominantly cosmetic, including themed body graphics, unique emblems and special interior touches.

Consumer advocates note that special and limited‑edition models often carry a premium for exclusivity and collectibility. When those expectations are perceived to be diluted, brands can face significant public scrutiny. The quick introduction of another batch at a higher price without clear communication fuelled dissatisfaction among early customers.

Mahindra’s offer to buy back vehicles for original owners seeks to address these issues. Whether it successfully alleviates customer concerns and preserves brand credibility will depend on how effectively the scheme is implemented. The situation also highlights the broader challenges that automakers face when balancing limited‑edition marketing strategies with strong consumer expectations in an increasingly competitive electric vehicle market.
