Maruti Suzuki India Limited has officially launched the e Vitara, marking its entry into the fully electric SUV segment in India. The introductory price starts at Rs 10.99 lakh ex showroom under a Battery As A Service ownership model. This special pricing is available until March 31, after which revised rates may apply.
The e Vitara is positioned as Maruti Suzuki’s first all electric sport utility vehicle developed specifically for the Indian market. With growing interest in electric mobility and supportive government policies, the launch represents a significant step in the company’s long term electrification strategy.
One of the key highlights of the offering is the Battery As A Service model. Under this structure, customers purchase the vehicle without the battery included in the upfront cost. Instead, they pay a battery rental charge calculated at Rs 3.99 per kilometre. This approach is designed to lower the initial purchase price, making electric vehicles more accessible to a wider customer base.
Industry experts note that battery cost accounts for a substantial portion of an electric vehicle’s overall price. By separating the battery cost from the vehicle purchase, manufacturers aim to reduce entry barriers and address concerns related to battery life and replacement expenses.
The e Vitara is expected to come equipped with modern features such as connected car technology, digital instrument displays and advanced driver assistance systems. Safety features are likely to include multiple airbags, electronic stability control and other protective systems in line with current market expectations.
While detailed technical specifications such as battery capacity and certified driving range may vary by variant, the SUV is expected to offer a range suitable for both city commuting and intercity travel. Charging compatibility with fast charging infrastructure is also anticipated, reflecting the expanding electric vehicle ecosystem in India.
Maruti Suzuki’s move comes at a time when competition in the electric SUV segment is intensifying. Several domestic and international automakers have introduced electric models across various price brackets. The Battery As A Service model could differentiate the e Vitara by offering flexibility and potentially reducing ownership risk.
Government incentives and state level subsidies for electric vehicles may further enhance affordability for eligible buyers. Consumers are advised to verify local policies and benefits before finalising purchase decisions.
The company has indicated that bookings and deliveries will commence shortly, with dealership networks prepared to support customer enquiries regarding the new ownership model.
The launch of the e Vitara signals Maruti Suzuki’s intent to play a larger role in India’s transition toward cleaner mobility solutions. As infrastructure for electric vehicles continues to develop, market response to innovative pricing models such as Battery As A Service will be closely watched.
