In a major step toward the electrification of its vehicle portfolio, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius revealed the all-new electric GLC SUV, ahead of its scheduled public debut at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich. This new electric offering represents the brand’s latest effort to strengthen its position in the growing global electric vehicle (EV) market, particularly in the premium mid-size SUV segment.

The electric version of the GLC, officially expected to be named the EQC successor or part of the EQ series, is based on a dedicated electric architecture rather than a modified internal combustion platform. This approach has allowed Mercedes-Benz engineers to optimize the vehicle for battery efficiency, performance, and space utilization. The unveiling event, led by Källenius, showcased the brand's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and luxury in the era of electric mobility.

From a design perspective, the electric GLC maintains the recognizable silhouette of its fuel-powered sibling but includes distinctive EV-focused styling elements. These include a sealed front grille, aerodynamically optimized wheels, and sleek LED lighting. The vehicle’s proportions emphasize both elegance and practicality, appealing to customers looking for a luxury SUV with green credentials.

The interior of the electric GLC is equipped with a fully digital dashboard, featuring the latest version of Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment system. The SUV offers over-the-air software updates, customizable digital displays, and voice-controlled features, along with sustainable materials and finishes. The cabin layout focuses on driver engagement, comfort, and intelligent user interface design.

Under the hood, the electric GLC is expected to offer multiple motor and battery configurations, catering to different market needs. Entry-level variants may offer rear-wheel drive with a single motor, while performance versions will likely feature dual-motor all-wheel-drive systems. Mercedes-Benz is targeting a driving range of over 500 kilometres (WLTP) for the top-end variants, thanks to an improved battery pack and regenerative braking technology.

In terms of safety and driving assistance, the vehicle includes a full suite of ADAS features, including adaptive cruise control, active lane-keeping assist, and autonomous emergency braking. The electric GLC also supports DC fast charging, capable of charging from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes using compatible chargers.

Ola Källenius emphasized during the unveiling that the electric GLC is not merely a product upgrade but a part of the brand’s larger commitment to achieving carbon-neutral mobility. Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to go fully electric in all markets that are ready by the end of the decade. The new electric GLC will play a critical role in that transition, especially in markets like Europe, China, and India, where EV demand is steadily rising.

The model is expected to enter global markets in phases following its formal debut at the IAA show. Mercedes-Benz India is also preparing to bring the model to Indian showrooms in the coming year, depending on global production schedules and demand forecasts.
