Nissan India has delayed the launch of its much anticipated mid size SUV, the Tekton, dealing a setback to its near term product roadmap in the Indian market. The Tekton is expected to compete in one of the most competitive segments in the country, going up against established players such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder. As of now, Nissan has not announced a revised launch date for the model.
The postponement of the Tekton comes shortly after Nissan delayed the launch of another key product, the Gravite MPV. The Gravite is a budget oriented seven seater multi purpose vehicle that was expected to mark Nissan’s re entry into the mass market people mover segment. The company had earlier confirmed that the Gravite would be launched first, followed by the Tekton SUV.
Initially, the Gravite MPV was scheduled to be unveiled on January 21. However, the launch event was postponed, with Nissan stating that new dates would be shared later. With the Tekton now also delayed, Nissan’s product rollout strategy for the Indian market appears to have hit a pause, raising questions about the brand’s short term plans.
While Nissan has not provided an official reason for postponing the Tekton, industry observers believe the delay could be due to a combination of factors. These may include internal product readiness, alignment with updated safety and emission norms, supply chain challenges, or strategic realignment of the brand’s India operations. Nissan has remained tight lipped on the exact cause behind the revised timelines.
The Tekton is expected to play a crucial role in Nissan’s India portfolio once it launches. Positioned in the mid size SUV segment, the model is likely to be based on the Renault Nissan Alliance platform and could share underpinnings with future Renault SUVs. The segment continues to see strong demand in India, making the Tekton an important product for Nissan’s revival strategy.
Reports suggest that the Tekton could offer modern styling, competitive cabin features, multiple powertrain options, and a strong focus on safety to match segment benchmarks. However, with the launch now postponed, customers and dealers may have to wait longer to see how Nissan plans to position the SUV against its rivals.
Nissan’s India lineup currently remains limited, and the delays to both the Gravite MPV and Tekton SUV may impact the brand’s growth momentum in the near term. That said, Nissan is expected to provide clarity on revised launch schedules in the coming months as it reassesses its market strategy.
