Stellantis, the multinational automotive conglomerate behind brands such as Jeep and Citroën, has announced plans to introduce Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Leapmotor to the Indian market by late 2025. This move is part of Stellantis' broader strategy to diversify its EV offerings and capitalize on the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions in India.
The collaboration will operate under the joint venture Leapmotor International, in which Stellantis holds a 51% stake. This partnership grants Stellantis exclusive rights to manufacture, export, and sell Leapmotor's EVs outside of China.
Initially, the Indian market will see the introduction of Leapmotor's T03, a compact city car, and the C10, a mid-size SUV. Both models are designed to cater to urban mobility needs and are expected to be competitively priced to appeal to a broad range of consumers.
While specific details regarding local assembly or importation strategies have not been disclosed, Stellantis is evaluating various production options to ensure cost-effectiveness and compliance with local regulations. The company already operates manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu, which could potentially be utilized for assembling Leapmotor vehicles.
Leapmotor, established in 2015, has rapidly gained recognition in the EV sector, offering a range of vehicles equipped with advanced technologies. In 2024, the company delivered nearly 300,000 vehicles globally, reflecting its growing footprint in the electric mobility space.
Stellantis' decision to bring Leapmotor to India aligns with the country's push towards electrification and sustainable transportation. By leveraging Leapmotor's technological expertise and Stellantis' global reach, the partnership aims to provide Indian consumers with affordable and efficient EV options.
The introduction of Leapmotor vehicles is anticipated to intensify competition in India's EV market, which is witnessing increased participation from both domestic and international players. As the country continues to invest in EV infrastructure and incentives, Stellantis' strategic move positions it to be a significant contributor to India's electric mobility transformation.
