Among the many long-term saving options available in India, the Public Provident Fund (PPF) stands out as one of the most trusted and tax-friendly investment tools.

Investing in your child’s future is one of the top priorities for any parent. Among the many long-term saving options available in India, the Public Provident Fund (PPF) stands out as one of the most trusted and tax-friendly investment tools. But can you open a PPF account in your child's name? The answer is yes, and here’s everything you need to know about how it works and why it’s beneficial.

Who Can Open a PPF Account for a Minor?

Parents or legal guardians can open a PPF account for a child below 18 years of age. However, the account is operated by the guardian until the child becomes a major. Once the child turns 18, the account can be transferred to their name with proper documentation.

Only one account can be opened for a minor, and a parent can be a guardian for only one minor PPF account. If you have more than one child, you can open a separate account for each, but each should be managed by either parent separately.

Contribution Rules

The total annual contribution limit in PPF is ₹1.5 lakh — this includes both your personal PPF account and the child’s account combined. For example, if you contribute ₹1 lakh to your own PPF, you can only deposit ₹50,000 in your child’s PPF for that financial year.

You can deposit a minimum of ₹500 and a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year. Contributions can be made in lump sums or installments (maximum 12 per year).

 Interest Rates and Lock-in Period

PPF currently offers an interest rate of around 7.1% per annum, which is compounded annually and backed by the Government of India. The lock-in period is 15 years, but partial withdrawals are allowed after the 7th year, under specific conditions such as education or medical emergencies.

Once the account matures, you can either withdraw the full amount or extend it in blocks of 5 years with or without making additional contributions.

 Tax Benefits

PPF comes under the EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax category:

Deposits are eligible for deduction under Section 80C.

Interest earned is tax-free.

Maturity amount is also exempt from tax.

This makes it a perfect tool for building a tax-efficient corpus for your child's higher education, marriage, or other future goals.

Final Thoughts

Opening a PPF account for your child is a smart and secure way to ensure financial stability for their future. With its guaranteed returns, tax benefits, and long-term wealth-building potential, it stands out as one of the most reliable investment instruments for Indian parents.
