New Delhi:
As the nation celebrates Chhath Puja this week, several states will observe a bank holiday on October 28, according to the official schedule released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The festival, primarily celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, marks one of the most significant occasions in the Hindu calendar and is dedicated to the worship of the Sun God, Surya, and Chhathi Maiya.
Under the RBI’s regional holiday calendar, October 28 has been designated as a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act in certain regions. This means that while banks in these states will remain closed for physical operations, customers can continue to access online and mobile banking services without disruption.
Chhath Puja is celebrated over four days, culminating in offerings to the setting and rising sun. On the final day, known as Usha Arghya, devotees gather near rivers and ponds to offer prayers for prosperity, health, and well-being. Due to the significance of this ritual, most local government offices, schools, and financial institutions in Bihar and Jharkhand remain closed.
According to the RBI’s official website, the closure applies to both public and private sector banks, including major institutions such as the State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Punjab National Bank (PNB), and Axis Bank, across affected regions. However, in states like Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu, banks will continue to function normally.
Bank customers are advised to plan transactions, cheque clearances, and branch-related activities accordingly. Digital platforms such as Internet banking, UPI, and ATMs will remain operational, enabling users to carry out essential services like money transfers, bill payments, and account management during the holiday period.
The RBI’s holiday list is state-specific and is determined based on local customs and regional observances. Therefore, the October 28 holiday does not apply nationwide, and customers in other states will experience regular banking operations.
Experts suggest completing important financial activities such as salary disbursals, loan payments, or business transactions before the weekend to avoid delays. As October 28 falls on a Saturday, some banks may also have limited working hours in certain areas, depending on regional norms.
Apart from Chhath Puja, the next major bank holidays will occur in November for Diwali, Guru Nanak Jayanti, and other regional festivals, according to the RBI’s holiday schedule. Customers are encouraged to stay informed through their bank’s official notifications to avoid inconvenience.
In summary, banks in Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Uttar Pradesh will remain closed on October 28 for Chhath Puja. While offline banking services will be unavailable, online banking and ATM facilities will continue to operate as usual across India.
