This approach reflects the government’s broader aim of combining financial security for workers with opportunities for skill development and education for the next generation.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has taken a major step to help subscribers reclaim unclaimed money from inoperative Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) accounts. Forgotten or dormant EPF accounts often contain significant amounts, ranging from a few thousand rupees to over a lakh, which many subscribers are unaware of. To address this, the ministry has announced a phased initiative that aims to return these unclaimed balances to rightful account holders.

According to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the plan will initially benefit 0.7 million subscribers in a pilot phase, with the goal of reaching over 3.1 million beneficiaries in subsequent phases. This move is expected to unlock funds that have remained inaccessible for years due to inoperative or forgotten accounts, ensuring workers receive the savings they are entitled to. The EPFO has over 6 crore members, and many inactive accounts have accrued interest over time, increasing the total value of unclaimed money.

The process for returning funds is designed to be streamlined and user-friendly. Subscribers with dormant accounts will receive notifications from EPFO, and eligible members can claim their money directly into their linked bank accounts. This initiative also includes awareness campaigns to help workers check the status of their accounts and complete necessary formalities for fund transfer. EPFO is leveraging its online platforms and mobile apps to make the claim process simple and efficient, reducing delays and administrative hurdles.

Alongside the EPF initiative, the government plans to enhance its labour welfare schemes. The merit-based scholarship of up to Rs. 25,000 will benefit children of unorganised workers, ensuring that financial support is provided for education. This approach reflects the government’s broader aim of combining financial security for workers with opportunities for skill development and education for the next generation. Experts say that such measures can significantly improve the welfare of workers in the unorganised sector and encourage timely contribution to provident funds.

Financial analysts note that this initiative could inject liquidity into the economy as millions of subscribers reclaim their savings, potentially increasing consumption and investment. Additionally, it reinforces the importance of monitoring EPF accounts and highlights the government’s commitment to safeguarding the financial interests of workers.

This pilot initiative is a first step toward a larger effort to address long-standing issues of unclaimed EPF money. By facilitating direct access to dormant funds and enhancing welfare schemes, the Ministry of Labour and Employment is taking a comprehensive approach to ensure financial inclusion and support for millions of Indian workers. Subscribers are encouraged to verify their account status on the EPFO portal and submit claims as early as possible to benefit from the program.
