They have advised taxpayers to keep all relevant documents and proofs, such as rent receipts, medical bills, investment proofs, and salary slips, readily available in case of verification.

The Income Tax Department has initiated a nationwide verification exercise to identify and curb fraudulent claims made in income tax returns. This move follows the department’s growing concerns over a surge in inaccurate and exaggerated claims, including false deductions, inflated exemptions, and unjustified refund demands by some taxpayers.

According to senior officials, the verification campaign will cover returns filed across multiple assessment years. The department is using advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence tools to identify anomalies and detect patterns suggestive of non-compliance. The goal is to ensure that genuine taxpayers are not affected while identifying and acting against willful misreporting or fraudulent filings.

The drive comes at a time when the department has noticed a significant rise in the number of suspicious claims, especially under popular deduction categories such as Section 80C, House Rent Allowance, and medical expenses. Some filers have also been found using fake or unverifiable documents to claim tax benefits.

Taxpayers whose returns are flagged for verification may receive official communication through the e-filing portal or registered email. These communications may seek clarification or require submission of additional documents to support the claims made in the return. Failure to respond within the stipulated time may lead to adjustments in refund claims, re-assessment of tax liabilities, or even penalties under relevant provisions of the Income Tax Act.

The department has clarified that this is not a reassessment drive but a verification initiative to ensure transparency and compliance. Taxpayers are encouraged to review their filings and correct any discrepancies through revised returns, if applicable. Those who have knowingly submitted false information may face legal consequences, including prosecution under sections related to tax fraud.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has emphasized that the initiative is part of the government’s larger effort to improve tax compliance and build trust in the taxation system. A statement from the department highlighted that honest taxpayers have nothing to fear, and the campaign is targeted specifically at those misusing the system.

Experts in the field of taxation have welcomed the move, stating that verification of returns is essential to maintaining the credibility of the tax administration. They have advised taxpayers to keep all relevant documents and proofs, such as rent receipts, medical bills, investment proofs, and salary slips, readily available in case of verification.

Chartered accountants and tax consultants are also advising clients to be cautious when claiming deductions and to avoid relying on informal or unverified channels for filing returns. Accuracy in tax filing, they note, is essential not just to avoid penalties but also to contribute to a transparent and efficient tax system.

As the verification campaign progresses, the Income Tax Department is expected to release further updates and guidelines to assist taxpayers. The initiative underscores the department’s shift toward technology-driven monitoring and its commitment to curbing tax-related malpractices.

The goal is to ensure that genuine taxpayers are not affected while identifying and acting against willful misreporting or fraudulent filings.
