Common issues include incorrect reporting of income, mismatch in tax credit details, or failure to reconcile data with Form 26AS.

The Income Tax Department has placed a temporary hold on the processing of income tax refunds after flagging mismatches in several Income Tax Returns filed by taxpayers. The move has affected a large number of individuals who were expecting refunds for the current assessment year, leading to concerns and requests for clarity from taxpayers across the country.

According to officials, the department’s automated systems detected inconsistencies between the details provided in Income Tax Returns and data available through other sources. These include mismatches related to income figures, tax deducted at source, advance tax payments, and information reflected in Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement. When such discrepancies are identified, refunds are withheld until the issues are resolved through verification.

The department has clarified that the action is part of routine checks aimed at ensuring accuracy and preventing incorrect refund claims. Officials emphasised that refunds are not being cancelled but temporarily paused until taxpayers provide clarifications or corrections where required. Notices are being issued electronically through the income tax portal, asking taxpayers to respond within the specified time frame.

Taxpayers are being advised to log in to the official income tax e-filing portal to check the status of their returns. In many cases, the portal displays the reason for the delay, along with instructions on how to respond. Common issues include incorrect reporting of income, mismatch in tax credit details, or failure to reconcile data with Form 26AS.

Chartered accountants have advised taxpayers not to panic and to carefully review any communication received from the department. Responding promptly and accurately to notices can help speed up the verification process and lead to the release of refunds. In cases where errors are identified, taxpayers may be required to file a revised return or submit supporting documents online.

The delay in refunds has also highlighted the importance of accurate filing and cross-checking details before submission. Experts recommend that taxpayers reconcile all income and tax deduction details with official records before filing returns to avoid such issues.

The Income Tax Department has not specified a fixed timeline for the release of pending refunds but has indicated that refunds will be processed once discrepancies are addressed. Officials have reiterated that the department remains committed to timely refund processing while maintaining checks to ensure compliance with tax laws.

As the filing season progresses, taxpayers are expected to continue monitoring their refund status and follow the prescribed procedures for resolution. The department is also expected to issue further clarifications if required, as taxpayers seek greater transparency regarding refund delays.
