Income Tax Refund Not Received Even After 5 Months? Common Reasons for Delay Explained

This often happens due to unreported interest income, mismatches in salary figures, or incorrect tax credit claims.

Income tax refunds in India are generally processed within a few weeks after filing returns, provided all details are accurate and the return is verified on time. However, many taxpayers report delays stretching beyond five months, leading to confusion and concern. Understanding the possible reasons behind such delays can help taxpayers take corrective steps.

One of the most common reasons for a delayed refund is incomplete processing of the income tax return. Even after filing, the return must be verified either electronically through Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or by sending a signed physical copy to the Centralised Processing Centre. If verification is pending, the refund process does not begin.

Discrepancies in income details can also cause delays. If the income declared in the return does not match the information available with the Income Tax Department, such as data from Form 26AS or the Annual Information Statement, the return may be flagged for review. This often happens due to unreported interest income, mismatches in salary figures, or incorrect tax credit claims.

Incorrect bank account details are another frequent issue. Refunds are credited directly to the bank account mentioned in the return. Errors in account numbers, IFSC codes, or failure to pre-validate the bank account on the income tax portal can lead to refund failure or rejection.

In some cases, refunds are delayed due to outstanding tax demands from previous years. If the department identifies unpaid taxes, it may adjust the refund amount against the pending demand after notifying the taxpayer. Until the issue is resolved, the refund remains on hold.

Refunds may also be delayed if the return is selected for scrutiny or additional verification. This does not necessarily indicate wrongdoing but requires the taxpayer to provide supporting documents or clarifications. Responding promptly to notices through the income tax portal can help speed up the process.

Technical issues on the portal or a high volume of returns during peak filing periods can further slow down processing. While the Income Tax Department has improved automation, delays can still occur, especially during large-scale assessments.

Taxpayers facing prolonged delays should regularly track their refund status on the official income tax e-filing website and check their registered email for communications from the department. If necessary, grievances can be raised through the portal’s grievance redressal mechanism.

Experts recommend double-checking return details before filing, ensuring timely verification, and maintaining accurate records to avoid refund-related issues. Staying proactive and informed can significantly reduce delays and ensure timely receipt of refunds.
