A large number of Indian taxpayers are facing delays in receiving their income tax refunds as more than 63 lakh income tax returns for Assessment Year 2025-26 remain unprocessed. According to the latest data from the Income Tax Department, over 6,300,000 returns filed by individuals, professionals, and companies are still pending verification and final approval.
The situation has created concern because December 31 was the last date for filing belated income tax returns. Many taxpayers expected that once the filing window closed, refunds would be processed quickly. However, the department continues to deal with a heavy backlog of submissions that require scrutiny.
Processing an income tax return involves several steps. After a taxpayer files the ITR, it must be electronically verified. The details provided in the return are then matched with information available from employers, banks, and other reporting agencies. If any mismatch or inconsistency is detected, the system holds the return for further examination. Only after successful validation does the department issue a refund where applicable.
Tax officials have explained that the rise in digital filings and increased compliance checks have made the process more time consuming. In some cases, taxpayers have not completed e-verification, which automatically keeps their returns pending. Others have errors in bank account details or discrepancies between Form 26AS and the filed return. Such issues slow down automated refund generation.
Experts say the current year saw a record number of filings close to the deadline, putting pressure on the system. The department relies heavily on technology for bulk processing, but returns with complex deductions, business income, or foreign assets often need manual attention. This leads to longer waiting periods for refunds.
The unprocessed figure of 63 lakh returns includes both original and revised filings. Many salaried taxpayers depend on timely refunds for meeting personal expenses, while small businesses require the funds for working capital. The delays have therefore impacted financial planning across different sections of society.
Chartered accountants and tax consultants are receiving numerous queries from worried clients about the refund status. They advise that taxpayers should first log into the Income Tax e-filing portal and check whether their return shows as verified. If verification is incomplete, it should be done immediately using Aadhaar OTP or net banking options.
The Income Tax Department has assured that the pending returns will be processed in a phased manner. Officials say priority is being given to returns that are fully verified and have no discrepancies. They also urge patience, stating that refunds cannot be issued without proper validation as this may lead to future legal complications.
Taxpayers can track the exact stage of processing online. The portal displays messages such as return under process, verification pending, or refund issued. Keeping accurate contact details updated on the website helps taxpayers receive notifications and intimation orders without delay.
The backlog highlights the need for more efficient processing mechanisms in India’s rapidly growing digital tax environment. Analysts believe that as systems improve and deadline pressure eases, refunds will start moving faster in the coming weeks.
For now, taxpayers are advised to avoid panic and ensure that all information in their ITR is correct. Filing returns early in future years and completing e-verification promptly are considered the best ways to prevent refund delays. The Income Tax Department continues to encourage full compliance so that returns can be cleared smoothly and taxpayers receive their refunds at the earliest possible time.
