The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued detailed guidelines explaining how customers can claim money lying in inactive or unclaimed bank accounts. Over the years, large sums have accumulated in accounts that have remained unused due to reasons such as relocation, lack of awareness, or the death of account holders. To address this issue, the RBI has put in place a structured mechanism to help depositors or their legal heirs recover such funds.

An account is classified as inactive if there are no customer-initiated transactions for a continuous period of two years. If the account remains inactive for ten years or more, the balance is treated as an unclaimed deposit. As per RBI rules, banks are required to transfer such unclaimed amounts to the Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund maintained by the RBI. Importantly, the transfer of funds to this account does not mean that the depositor loses the right to claim the money.

The RBI has clearly stated that depositors, nominees, or legal heirs can claim the funds at any time. To do so, the claimant must approach the bank where the account was originally held. Banks are required to verify the identity of the claimant through Know Your Customer (KYC) documents and supporting records such as passbooks, account statements, nomination details, or legal heir certificates, depending on the case.

To improve transparency, the RBI has instructed banks to display details of unclaimed deposits on their official websites. This allows customers to check whether their name appears in the list of unclaimed account holders. Many banks have also introduced online search tools and customer support services to help individuals track and reclaim their funds more easily.

In cases where the account holder has passed away, legal heirs or nominees must submit additional documents such as a death certificate and proof of relationship. The RBI has advised banks to simplify these procedures and avoid unnecessary delays, ensuring that genuine claimants are not burdened with excessive documentation.

The central bank has also emphasized that no service charges should be levied for claiming unclaimed deposits. Banks must process claims promptly and communicate clearly with customers regarding the status of their applications. If a claimant faces issues, they can escalate the matter through the bank’s grievance redressal mechanism or approach the RBI Banking Ombudsman.

Financial experts advise individuals to regularly review their bank accounts, update contact details, and inform family members about existing accounts to prevent funds from becoming unclaimed. Periodic transactions, even small ones, can keep accounts active and avoid classification as dormant or inactive.

Through these measures, the RBI aims to protect depositors’ interests, improve financial awareness, and ensure that unclaimed money is returned to its rightful owners. Customers are encouraged to check their bank records and take timely action to reclaim any funds that may be lying unused.
