This will help promote the adoption of cashless payments across the country, contributing to the government’s vision of a digital and cashless economy.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced an important update regarding the UPI 123Pay service by increasing the transaction limit to Rs. 10,000. This move is a significant step toward further promoting digital payments in India, especially for those who rely on feature phones and have limited access to internet connectivity. UPI 123Pay, which was introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), allows users to carry out digital transactions through voice-based commands, text messages, or missed calls, making it accessible to millions of Indians who do not have smartphones or consistent internet access.

Previously, UPI 123Pay had a transaction limit of Rs. 5,000, which restricted the scope of payments that could be made through this service. With the new increase in the limit, users can now carry out transactions of up to Rs. 10,000, making it more feasible for people to use the platform for a wider range of financial activities, including paying utility bills, transferring funds, and making purchases without needing to visit a bank or rely on cash payments.

The UPI 123Pay service was initially launched with the aim of providing greater financial inclusion, especially for people in rural areas and remote regions of India, where access to smartphones and high-speed internet might be limited. By offering a simple and easy-to-use digital payment solution via feature phones, it eliminates the barriers to digital transactions that many people face. Now, with the raised transaction limit, more people can take full advantage of the service for everyday financial transactions.

The service works on simple features such as voice prompts, SMS, and USSD codes, which don’t require a smartphone or an internet connection. This is particularly useful for senior citizens, people with limited technological literacy, or those who may have difficulty using apps on smartphones. The increased transaction limit also enables users to engage in higher-value transactions without having to resort to other more complicated or expensive payment methods like demand drafts or bank transfers.

For businesses and small merchants, this decision by the RBI makes it easier to accept higher-value payments digitally. It also allows businesses in rural areas, who may not have access to card-based payment systems or point-of-sale machines, to receive payments through UPI 123Pay. This will help promote the adoption of cashless payments across the country, contributing to the government’s vision of a digital and cashless economy.

The service adheres to the same security protocols as regular UPI transactions, ensuring that all payments made through UPI 123Pay are protected. Users authenticate their payments using a secure personal identification number (PIN), just like with traditional UPI-based transactions. This security feature is critical to maintaining user trust and ensuring that digital payments are safe and reliable.

With this increase in the transaction limit, UPI 123Pay is now more practical and versatile for users who want to make higher-value transactions directly from their feature phones. It makes it easier to send money, pay for services, or transfer funds without the need for physical cash, which is particularly important in rural areas where access to banking services may be limited. By making it easier to transact digitally, the RBI hopes to drive further adoption of digital payments, especially among those who are still dependent on traditional banking methods.
