In a significant move towards digitization, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that, effective May 1, 2025, all applications for regulatory authorizations, licenses, and approvals must be submitted exclusively through the PRAVAAH portal. This directive applies to all regulated entities, including banks, financial institutions, and other entities under the RBI's purview.
What is PRAVAAH?
PRAVAAH, an acronym for Platform for Regulatory Application, Validation, and Authorization, is a secure, web-based portal launched by the RBI on May 28, 2024. The platform is designed to digitize and streamline the process of submitting regulatory applications, thereby enhancing efficiency, transparency, and service delivery timelines.
Key Features of the PRAVAAH Portal
Digital Workflow: Applicants can submit applications, provide clarifications, and receive decisions entirely online, eliminating the need for physical paperwork.
Real-Time Tracking: The portal enables users to monitor the status of their applications through SMS and email notifications.
Comprehensive Form Library: As of April 2025, PRAVAAH hosts 108 application forms covering various departments and services, with more to be added as needed.
Time-Bound Approvals: The RBI commits to timely disposal of applications using internal tracking and automated workflows.
User Support Resources: The portal provides a detailed user manual, FAQs, and tutorial videos to assist users in the application process.
Applicability
The mandate encompasses a wide range of regulated entities, including:
Scheduled Commercial Banks (including Small Finance Banks, Local Area Banks, and Regional Rural Banks)
Urban Co-operative Banks
State Co-operative Banks and Central Co-operative Banks
All-India Financial Institutions
Non-Banking Financial Companies (including Housing Finance Companies)
Primary Dealers
Payment System Operators
Credit Information Companies
In exceptional cases where digital submission is not feasible, applicants may continue to submit their applications directly to the RBI. However, such applications will also be processed through the PRAVAAH system, ensuring centralized record-keeping and communication.
Impact and Outlook
Since its launch, PRAVAAH has processed approximately 4,000 applications, indicating growing adoption across the financial ecosystem. The RBI's mandate aims to further this adoption, ensuring a uniform, efficient, and transparent regulatory application process.
By centralizing and digitizing regulatory submissions, the RBI anticipates improved turnaround times, reduced administrative burdens, and enhanced stakeholder satisfaction. This move aligns with broader governmental initiatives to promote digital governance and ease of doing business in India.
